After reaching the top spot on Gaon music chart for their previous album, Listen to My Word, Oh My Girl comes back in vibrant colors with their fifth EP, Coloring Book. Coloring Book brings out the fun and livelihood of spring with a number of sweet tracks to pump up the blooming mood, but unfortunately lacks any major differentiation to stand out in the sea of similar Kpop albums.
Track 1 – 컬러링북 (Coloring Book)
The title track opens up Coloring Book with its funky broadway-like horns and playful jumpy beats. There are moments during the verse that sounded so fun to listen to, but the excitement quickly diminishes as the awkward chorus comes in. The melody, the beat mix, and chants just don’t mingle well together. The track also lacks any catchy hooks that would have made it even livelier, making for a rather disappointing title song.
Track 2 – Real World
Real World starts with acoustic guitar joined by light beats in the mid-verse. The track is a sweet laid-back song that is not only fit for spring but also for a summer getaway. The guitar strumming sounds beautiful but I think the verse lacks a bit of emotions, making the track come off as dry.
Track 3 – Agit
Agit comes next with a 90s girl group pop song vibe. Oh My Girl sings the track in a really cute and relaxing way, talking about how they are nervous to figure out who their dream guy likes. Overall, Agit gives off a soothing vibe as I listen to Oh My Girl’s angelic voices.
Track 4 – In My Dreams
The next song is an acoustic guitar-based track with dreamy chimes adorned by the beautiful voices of the girls. Agit may be relaxing but In My Dreams steps it up with sweet harmony vocals, making it a perfect track to listen to after a long busy day.
Track 5 – Perfect Day
Perfect Day concludes Coloring Book with the upbeat mood just like the title track. Perfect Day sounds nearly like the rock version of Coloring Book, which can be heard during the chorus part. It has this J-rock spirit with a really lively melody and powerful guitar riffs that sounds marvelous together — a much better rendition of the title track if you ask me.
