NC.A is probably best known for her debut song My Student Teacher, and the music video that came along with it. Now, she’s back with her first full album Time To Be A Woman suggesting a transition to a more mature take on her music. Time To Be A Woman is an album in which NC.A experiments with different genres, from EDM to mainstream pop. However, this is met with varying results.
Track 1 다음역 (Next Station)
To commence with Time To Be A Woman, Next Station is a powerful ballad that is surprisingly fast-paced. This number is one that takes unexpected turns, making the song attention-grabbing from start to finish.
Track 2 – U in Me
This soulful air is one that is reminiscent of music from the early 2000s, giving a sense of nostalgia to the listener. U in Me is a song that is about the feeling of longing, something many listeners can relate to.
Track 3 – 후후후 (Hoo Hoo Hoo)
Hoo Hoo Hoo is a song that is really abrasive on the ears. NC.A’s cheerfulness sounds forced, and the chorus just does not fit in with the verses, making this a lackluster attempt at a cheerful pop anthem.
Track 4 – 바닐라쉐이크 (Vanilla Shake)
Vanilla Shake is better than Hoo Hoo Hoo, but only by a small bit. Although the melody is quirky and uplifting, NC.A’s airy voice fails to complement it. Also, at times her liveliness sounds unnatural, exhibiting the same problem with Hoo Hoo Hoo.
Track 5 – Coming Soon
Coming Soon is a sanguine number with a largely pop foundation. With NC.A’s youthful singing and an energetic tune, it’s quite hard to resist smiling after hearing this song.
Track 6 – 통금시간 (Cinderella Time)
Cinderella Time is a quintessentially emotional ballad. This wistful track is able to highlight NC.A’s honey-sweet vocals, stirring the hearts of listeners.
Track 7 – 미쳤나봐 (Crazy You)
Changing gears from the previous tracks, Crazy You is a blithe, playful and jazz-inspired track. The frisky trumpet, NC.A’s honeyed vocals and the constant flux in the beat all accumulate for one interesting song.
Track 8 – 얼마나 더 (How long time…)
As compared to Crazy You, How Long Time is a mellow ballad with not much going on. Ballad is a genre NC.A tries far too often, so this song doesn’t particularly stand out. But her beautiful voice, as always, makes this song listenable, if not amazing.
Track 9 – 본능 (Instinct)
NC.A tries to probe into the EDM genre with Instinct, but she does not have the powerful voice to tackle a song with such high energy. As a result, this track is harsh on the ears, since her voice is incompatible with the clamorous beat. Not only that, there are times during this track when it’s just impossible not to cringe, making it one burnt mess of a song.
