Could it really be that the collaboration between YG’s top idol rappers is actually happening? That’s right! Show Me the Money Season 3 winner Bobby of iKON and Season 4 runner-up Song Minho of Winner teamed up to release an one-of-a-kind album titled The MOBB. This is surely a duo that many fans including myself have been waiting for and the boys do not disappoint. Minho’s deep and husky rap is the perfect match for Bobby’s flamboyant and passionate rap. Together, MOBB brings us four diverse yet unique party anthems not to be missed.
Track 1 – 꽐라 (Holup)
The album opener is a fiery number from Bobby. Holup immediately kicks into high gear with powerful clapping beats, heavy drum beats, and a hint of tribal flavored synths popular at YG these days (also heard from rookie group Black Pink). Bobby’s rap is as swagger-filled and flashy as ever. He’s perfectly in harmony with the song’s rowdiness and adds his own wildness to it as if a trapped beast trying to break out. Overall, I loved the addictiveness of the track and Bobby’s high energy.
Track 2 – 붐벼 (Full House)
Here we have Full House, the first duet track between Bobby and Minho. This is a high voltage number with 90’s signature low-fi hip hop beats as its foundation. There are lots of sound distortions and auto-tunes in this track, making it both modern and a bit messy at times. However the bridge towards the end of the track where the boys do a short half-sung half-rapped verse over clean EDM beats makes up for it.
Track 3 – 몸 (Body)
Next up is Body, Minho’s solo track and is indeed full of his personal style. This song takes a complete turn of direction from hyper frenzy in the previous tracks to a seductive and smoldering slow jam with heavy trap beats. Minho’s deep voice and fully enunciated rap clearly expresses the lyrics and his painful emotions. The chorus of Body is particularly catchy with a strong beat coupled with a melodic digital keyboard string that brings out all the sentimental feelings.
Track 4 – 빨리 전화해 (Hit Me)
The album closer starts with a refreshing 80’s disco hip hop beat reminiscent of the Michael Jackson era. Hit Me quickly layers on more modern day synths and beats along with the boys’ fast and varied rap. During the chorus, Hit Me turns into a bit more of an up-to-date club dance tune. I particularly like the nostalgic beat and the group chanting part they added at the end which was an unexpected way to finish the song up.
