Following her fellow member Amber, f(x)’s Luna is the second member of the group to have a solo album. It seems like recently SM Entertainment has been dropping synth bombs everywhere, and Luna’s solo album is no exception. Free Somebody is a wave of electro-pop dance music and soothing ballad tracks that you’ll surely enjoy surfing into.
Track 1 – Free Somebody
Starting it off is the album’s title track, Free Somebody, co-written by the American singer-songwriter, JoJo, and Swedish production team “The Family”. Free Somebody is a synth-infused song that has a 70’s-80’s electro pop feel with some funky piano that’ll make you get up on your feet and just dance to it. The synths also reminded me of Tiffany‘s song, I Just Wanna Dance — maybe because of the nostalgic feel I got from it.
Track 2 – Breathe
Finger snaps welcome us to the second song of the album, Breathe. It’s a mid tempo ballad with some subtle synths, decorated with Luna’s beautiful vocals. Though I really like Luna’s high notes here, the melody is just so simple that it lacked flavor and made me think that it only leaned on Luna’s vocals for it not to be a flop.
Track 3 – Keep on Doin’
The album approaches a high point with Keep on Doin’, which sounds like a sister song to TTS’s Holler, because of its beat. Keep on Doin’ is an EDM track with some dominant synths and Luna’s surprising vocals, as she shows some variety with her high notes and falsettos.
Track 4 – 예쁜 소녀 (I Wish)
My favorite song on the album, I Wish uniquely plays with its synths while being a ballad. Luna had a part in writing and composing this track, which I think turned out well. Luna’s relaxing, soft vocals combined harmoniously with the song’s unusual elements, producing a masterpiece.
Track 5 – Galaxy
The energy goes up again with Galaxy, another electro-pop song with some heavy drops. While it’s a powerful track, it got a little bit boring for me as I think it’s not as exciting as the other dance songs on this album.
Track 6 – My Medicine
Another song that highlights Luna’s writing and composing skills, My Medicine is a ballad that ends the album gracefully with her dreamy voice. With a wistful piano and flowing chimes, this song is as cozy and relaxing as it can possibly be, making me want to listen to it every night to wind down.
