Ending the month of February on a nice note is Lovelyz’s second full album R U Ready?. As they become more of a mature group in Kpop, it’s expected that they would diversify into more genres and styles in their music. And Lovelyz have definitely met these expectations, with delightful dance tracks and original R&B songs that divert from their typical ballads.
Track 1 – R U Ready?
R U Ready? is a short yet interesting instrumental introduction to the rest of the album. It’s made up of many mystic sounds borrowed from the title track that are surprisingly pleasant-sounding. It definitely sets the mood and expectations for the upcoming songs.
Track 2 – WoW!
WoW! is a fun (and experimental to a certain degree) pop track that has more than enough substance to keep you captivated. Although it sounds a mite too similar to their previous title track Destiny, it’s a low-key dance track that transcends the boundary Destiny sets.
Track 3 – Cameo
Cameo is a cute and romantic track that, unfortunately, lacks a catchy hook. Besides that, the synth-infused beat clashes with Lovelyz’s singing quite often, especially during the chorus. And the synth-infused beat itself doesn’t feel well-organized either, contributing to my disappointment with this song.
Track 4 – Emotion
Emotion is a delicate pop track that puts retro influences at just the right places to keep things interesting and give a sense of comfort to the song. Now that I have heard this track, I feel that Lovelyz have the potential to do well with this particular style of music.
Track 5 – 새벽별 (Dawn Star)
Dawn Star is what you would usually expect from Lovelyz — a warm and emotional ballad. However, it allows you take a break from the cheerfulness and energy from previous tracks, and this respite ensures that things do not get monotonous.
Track 6 – 첫눈 (First Snow)
First Snow is also a leisurely and heartfelt number, and sounds terribly similar in style to Dawn Star. Due to its similarity to the previous track, it might take quite a bit of effort to get through the song.
Track 7 – 똑똑 (Knock Knock)
Knock Knock removes the slowness and melancholy of the last two tracks with an uplifting melody and the girls’ cheerful personalities. Although it’s not taking much of a turn from Lovelyz’s usual concept, it is still fun and entertaining to be listening to.
Track 8 – The
The starts out with a mellow and dreamy tune, but suddenly bursts into a loud and impactful chorus. The slight influences of rock in this makes it gain prominence as compared to the rest of the songs in this album. With small baby steps towards new concepts and genres, I am sure the music Lovelyz puts out will be even more interesting over time.
Track 9 – Night and Day
Night and Day is not really your typical slow ballad. Its melody is played in a minor key, which sounds striking as compared to major keys, and this is a smart move to attract the interest of the listener. Night and Day is a mystic R&B track that you might enjoy if you like to defy ordinary and listening to more edgy songs.
Track 10 – 숨바꼭질 (Hide and Seek)
If compared to Night and Day, Hide and Seek doesn’t make much of an impact. It stays within Lovelyz’s comfort zone of soothing ballads, and doesn’t add in interesting features of other genres of music.
Track 11 – 나의 연인 (My Little Lover)
Finally, My Little Lover is a haunting R&B track with an ominous tone. The medium pace of the track ensures that the song never has a dull moment. The suspense and emotion in their voices can clearly be felt in this unique track.
