Get ready to loosen up with the talented EXO member, Lay, who just released his solo debut album, Lose Control. Fans have long waited for the spotlight to shine on Lay as he often gets overshadowed by other members. Lose Control contains six tracks of pure relaxation completed with the chart-topping single, What U Need?, released on Lay’s birthday as a gift to his fans. This mandopop album that Lay helped compose broke records for most sales from a solo artist on release day, exceeding 200,000 pre-orders and 50,000 physical copies sold.

Track 1 – Lose Control (失控)feel4

A slow-paced R&B track opens up the album where Lay’s sweet and smooth vocal lures you in. The seductive vibe of Lose Control is perfectly complemented by its equally suggestive lyrics and sexy choreography. The impressive high notes in this song proves that Lay is a talented singer.

Track 2 – What U Need?feel4

Next up is the title track. What U Need? is a bit faster than Lose Control with some play on synths. It’s a funky pop track with brass sounds mixed with a hint of jazz. As soon as this track was released, it topped the charts in several countries like Alibaba music chart in China.

Track 3 – Tonightfeel4

Tonight has a slower pace than the previous tracks. It’s got a chill lounge music vibe, where the beat is subtle and relaxing. Lay’s vocals are more laid back and toned down, making it a great lullaby for the night.

Track 4 – MYMfeel3

MYM is a slow jam R&B number with a groovy melody that gives off similar sensual vibe as the other tracks in this album. The key difference is in the mood. MYM contains a bit more sadness with heavy, low-pitched piano notes playing at the start. Somehow, the slowness and somberness of this track made it less interesting and noticeable for me.

Track 5 – MYM (Acoustic Ver.)feel4

Contrary to the original, I really liked the acoustic version of MYM. When paired with gentle acoustic guitar strumming, Lay’s sweet vocals become more clear with extra ad libs that add depth to the song. The song also feels less solemn and more approachable.

Track 6 – Relax (守望)feel4

Ending the album quietly is another slow paced R&B track with auto-tune. Relax really makes you feel calm with its mellow piano and subtle synths. Combined with Lay’s soft whispery voice, Relax creates a perfectly chill atmosphere.
