Super Junior’s Kyuhyun brings us his second mini-album Fall, Once Again just as the weather is getting colder and the feeling of emptiness surges. Like the title suggests, the whole album is filled with sentimental and heartfelt ballads that are perfectly appropriate for autumn. Kyuhyun’s tender and magnetic voice is sure to comfort many lonely hearts this fall.
Track 1 – 밀리언조각 (A Million Pieces)
The album opener, A Million Pieces, is an emotion-filled pop ballad backed by melodic classical piano and violin. There is a sense of loneliness and longing that resonates throughout the song yet Kyuhyun’s soothing voice brings comfort and peace. The lyrics of A Million Pieces poetically describes how a love so deep yet so unreachable is like a shining star that fills an empty heart every night — piece by piece.
Track 2 – 좋은사람 (Remember Me)
The background instrumental of Remember Me uses primarily electronic piano with light percussion sounds reminiscent of 90’s ballad song style. The composition is also quite similar to that era — simple yet structured, slower in tempo yet heart-warming. I for one, quite enjoy the nostalgia that this pleasant ballad brings me.
Track 3 – 긴 팔 (Autumn Sleeves)
Autumn Sleeves is a soft ballad full of fall’s melancholic sentiment thanks to the gentle plucking sound of the acoustic guitar. Kyuhyun’s warm voice complements the sad feeling of the song and precisely conveys the wistful solitude expressed within the lyrics.
Track 4 – 피아노 숲 (Piano Forest)
Piano Forest‘s mid-tempo bossa nova infused melody changes up the mood to be much lighter and brighter compared to previous tracks. The bouncy piano instrumentals and Kyuhyun’s sweet vocals make Piano Forest one relaxing tune, though the overall melody comes across as a bit repetitive.
Track 5 – 그냥 보고 싶어 그래 (Because I Miss You)
Beautiful acoustic piano melody opens this sorrowful ballad describing the painful yearning of one’s love. The airiness in Kyuhyun’s voice brings out the earnest longing within Because I Miss You even more and is sure to melt the hearts of many.
Track 6 – 바람 (Wind)
Light-hearted acoustic guitar and piano give Wind an understated yet calming melody. Coupled with Kyuhyun’s laid-back voice, the whole song feels rather healing, but also at the risk of putting you to sleep. The classical piano solo halfway through adds more charm to Wind.
Track 7 – 안녕의 방식 (Ways To Say Goodbye)
The way Fall, Once Again says goodbye to us is with a pop ballad number that exudes the sadness of farewell from its somber melody composition to Kyuhyun’s vocals. Though as emotion-filled as the rest of the album, the slow build-up also makes the track feel a bit draggy for my taste.
