Kim Hyung Jun is part of SS501, one of the early day Kpop groups that acted as trailblazers for the spread of Kpop around the world, particularly in Japan. Also, he is a part of the currently active sub-unit, Double S 301. Transforming his image, he has released a repackage for his 3rd mini-album, AM to PM 5-11-1. AM to PM 5-11-1 is an album that is remarkably similar to Jun.K’s style of music, with sultry R&B songs at every step of the way. However, unlike Jun.K, Hyung Jun has a softer voice that is able to express a subtle mix of feelings in his songs.
Track 1 – 7 O’Clock
Kicking AM to PM 5-11-1 off is a dreamy, sensual EDM number titled 7 O’Clock with a significant hip hop inspiration. The pleasant-sounding elements pull themselves together for a flamboyantly dynamic masterpiece — definitely suitable as a nightclub track.
Track 2 – 기대 (Count On You)
Count On You transcends the boundaries of ballads and contemporary R&B. Unexpectedly, these two genres blend peacefully together in this soft yet impactful tune. Hyung Jun’s airy, classy voice complements the dreamlike instrumentals.
Track 3 – 내일 또 모레(2MORO)
Considering the high expectations created from the previous songs, 2MORO misses the mark. The leisurely melody is alluring, but Hyung Jun’s voice sounds unnatural and mechanical here, tarnishing the song a little bit.
Track 4 – WOO YEAH
WOO YEAH fits with the mood of the rest of the album, having a sizzling backtrack. However, Hyung Jun’s voice sounds awkward here, especially during his croons in the chorus. A lack of connection between the different sections of the song can also be felt.
Track 5 – 7 O’Clock (inst.)
