The former vocalist of Girls’ Generation, Jessica Jung, is making a name for herself after her departure from S.M. While Girls’ Generation continued to promote as an eight member group, Jessica took some time off to focus on her fashion label. However, she couldn’t suppress her passion for music and recently made a comeback with an almost entirely self-produced album, With Love, J. This debut album shows a softer side of Jessica, with delicate but largely homogenous tunes to warm your heart.
Track 1 – Fly
With a western like bouncy beat and subtle synths, With Love, J begins with title track Fly. This track reminded me of a Disney song, The Glow, with similar melody and also talking about someone reaching her dreams. Fly turns whimsical and dreamy as the beat disappears, leaving the subtle synths to highlight Jessica’s voice before reaching the rap part, which is a thumbs up for me.
Track 2 – Big Mini World
Big Mini World is similar to Fly in composition except it’s a bit slower and possesses less synths. I was waiting for something in it to be different from the title track but the only thing that was noticeable were the high notes. Other than that, it’s nothing special.
Track 3 – Falling Crazy in Love
A fresh ballad track comes next. Falling Crazy in Love is a mid-tempo song that had me hoping for an explosion of high notes during the transition from the bridge to the chorus because the beat was building up in intensity, but sadly it didn’t happen.
Track 4 – Love Me The Same
Another mid-tempo, light song on With Love, J, Love Me The Same sounds just like the previous tracks with no differentiating elements. I got bored of it right away and only made it through thanks to Jessica’s sweet vocals.
Track 5 – Golden Sky
My favorite song of the album, Golden Sky, is a ballad song with a relaxing lounge-like beat. The soothing piano made me feel like I was catching stars on a starry night. I really appreciate the variety in the tempo as Jessica’s delicate vocal decorates the already beautiful melody.
Track 6 – Dear Diary
The album closer also has a lounge-like feel to it with a bit more spice from the jazzy instruments. Unlike the other tracks, Jessica adds in a little more of her high notes in Dear Diary. Her voice is just a perfect fit with the jazz inspired track, like milk to coffee, and makes me feel calm as I listen to it.
