A year after their last studio album Season 2, Infinite is back with their fifth mini-album Reality. This time, the boys manage to bring a well-done album that hits on a full range of moods. From the dark drama of Bad to the liveliness of Moonlight and the earnest felt in Love Letter, Reality delivers unforgettable experiences filled with diverse emotions.
Track 1 – Betting
Betting is a short instrumental track that opens the album and sets the whole mood. It begins with ominous classical piano melody then striking violin riffs and electronic beats come in to make it sound even more dangerous. Betting is essentially an appetizer before the main course — Bad.
Track 2 – Bad
Sharing the same perilous feeling as Betting, Bad is an upbeat dance pop tune with hints of hip hop and EDM. Besides the extremely addictive hook, what makes Bad special is the theatrical symphony instruments that make it sound even more dramatic and therefore memorable. It’s refreshing to hear Infinite take on a darker song, something that they don’t do very often.
Track 3 – Moonlight
This catchy disco influenced track certainly makes you feels like you’re dancing the night away under the moonlight. Unlike Bad, Moonlight is full of Infinite’s original flavor — bright, groovy, and dynamic. My favorite part are the layers of awesome falsetto vocals weaved together to make the song multi-dimensional. Such an Infinite signature move!
Track 4 – 발걸음 (Walk to Remember)
Walk to Remember slows things down to a mid-tempo pop song, though unfortunately, not a strong one in either composition or emotional value. The track lacks a distinguishable hook and tune, so it’s not particularly memorable despite its title. To me, the best part is probably the rap segments where I can at least feel the attitude that Infinite is trying to convey.
Track 5 – 마주보며 서 있어 (Between Me and You)
The verses of Between Me and You are sung unplugged with minimal instruments in the background, yet the chorus unexpectedly explodes into a powerful and wistful rock ballad with full on electronic guitars and weighty drums. This song is a great example of Infinite’s amazing abilities at building towards an emotional eruption vocally, something that I’ve liked about them since their debut.
Track 6 – 러브레터 (Love Letter)
As the only ballad song on Reality, Love Letter has a romantic melody brought to life by beautiful acoustic piano riffs and Infinite’s smooth yet soulful vocals. The boys’ sweet confessions in this track are sure to melt many hearts and ears alike.
Track 7 – 엔딩을 부탁해 (Up to You)
Infinite decided to use a funky dance pop number to wrap up Reality. The beats, synths, and vocals are all hard-hitting, edgy, and a bit reminiscent of SHINee. Up to You certainly is an interesting and unique song, but the overall melody is a bit flat for my personal taste.
