Hyuna is back with her first solo release since 4-Minute disbanded. A’wesome is her 5th mini-album where she shows a sexy and mature side. Hyuna also contributed to writing the lyrics. A’wesome is a mix between several genres, including pop, hip hop, and R&B, but the genres bounce around a lot in just six songs. This mini-album allowed Hyuna to experiment with her personal sound since she is officially a solo artist now.
Track 1 – U & Me♡
U & Me♡ is a pleasant surprise for a Hyuna album opener. The song showcases her vocals over a sultry synth beat. U & Me♡ has hints of the chill out genre, which is a slower tempo of house music. The track’s dance beat does pick up in the chorus. This track shows that Hyuna has a wider range and can tackle different genres.
Track 2 – How’s This?
How’s This? is a high tempo track with undertones of trap hip hop beats. This is a very Hyuna type song which makes it fitting to be the title track. Although the chorus is addictive, Hyuna’s voice and the redundancy of the lyrics become a bit overbearing.
Track 3 – Do It!
With autotuned ‘do its’ to start the track, Do It! has a strong hip hop vibe. The song begins to change intensities during the bridge which gains a cheeky pop-like feel in the chorus. Do It! highlights both Hyuna’s vocals and rapping skills. The mix of different genres is very popular in current Kpop music which makes this a pretty radio-friendly track.
Track 4 – Morning Glory
Light and jazzy with a relaxed style, Morning Glory brings on a new vibe to the mini-album. Hyuna is able to show her vocal skills in an alternative R&B number. This is a minimalistic song that features hip hop artist, Qim Isle. Qim Isle’s lethargic flow suits the overall energy of Morning Glory exceptionally well.
Track 5 – Freaky
Starting with a couple smooches, the trap/hip hop feeling returns. Freaky is a suggestive song, and from the delivery to the backtrack, it screams Hyuna. Her unique voice is harmonious with all of the elements. This is a song that would definitely be played at a hip hop or dance club.
Track 6 – Wolf
Unique sirens initiate an emotional, sensual hip hop track that features hip hop star, HanHae. Wolf has a soft, almost dreamlike delivery and there’s a nice balance between vocals and rapping from both artists. With deep bass, Wolf makes a great, slow hip hop track. This is a style Hyuna should venture into more in the future.
