Gugudan is arguably one of the most popular girl group debuts of 2016, and to keep up with the momentum, they’ve released Act.2 Narcissus, which serves as a sequel to Act.1 The Little Mermaid. As expected of sequels, Act.2 Narcissus complements Gugudan’s previous album, with edgy tracks that are upgrades from the former, albeit such innovations are not always as successful as intended.
Track 1 – Rainbow
Kicking off the album is Rainbow, an enjoyable ditty with a strong and uplifting beat. The fast pace and the loud brass instruments ensure that things never get dull.
Track 2 – 나 같은 애 (A Girl Like Me)
A Girl Like Me is an experimental EDM track with loud synth sounds acting as the backdrop. Taking a totally different direction from their previous title track Wonderland, A Girl Like Me makes a powerful statement that Gugudan is a group that can adapt to any genre given to them. It’s a dance track practically for a night out with friends.
Track 3 – 미워지려 해 (Hate You)
Hate You is an innocent yet spunky pop track. Electronic sounds can be evidently heard in the background, forming an essential part of the song. However, there is a lack of cohesiveness between the different parts of Hate You. In particular, the change between the dance break of the bridge and the final chorus was far too jarring.
Track 4 – 거리 (One Step Closer)
One Step Closer is a sweet R&B track that is impossible not to like. Letting Gugudan’s pleasant vocals in this sweet tune surround you on a peaceful night is definitely ideal.
Track 5 – 소원 들어주기 (Make A Wish)
Closing Act.2 Narcissus is a quintessential acoustic ballad. I was expecting this to be more daring and innovative, but it turned out be a bit too plain. But if you like slow songs, no matter how repetitive they might seem, you would like Make A Wish, which includes the usage of strong instruments, such as the guitar, in it.
