After wrapping up a world tour, the seven men of GOT7 released their second full length album, Flight Log: Turbulence. This album is a follow up to Flight Log: Departure but takes on more of a strong and masculine vibe, full of energy. The members also took on a more serious role in the development of Flight Log: Turbulence, writing and composing the majority of the tracks. With songs from many genres including hip hop, trap, and EDM, there’s something in this album for everyone.
Track 1 – Skyway
Revving up an engine to get everyone ready for this hip hop EDM mashup, Skyway kicks off the album. Skyway has unique sounding horns and interesting drum rhythms to keep the anticipation up. The rappers showcase a trap-like rap style that suits the rhythms really well. With as much that is going on, the song still has a mellow and chill vibe to it. Skyway is a track that allows GOT7 to show a different side to them and is a great album opener.
Track 2 – 하드캐리 (Hard Carry)
Hard Carry is a title track that never lets up. This track sticks with the EDM genre but sprinkles it more with trap for this nonstop party banger. Hard Carry allows GOT7 to show a more aggressive side that they haven’t shown yet. With great rise and falls, you can’t get bored on this ride. With booming bass and unique synths, GOT7 wants to carry the atmosphere, and that they do.
Track 3 – Boom X3
GOT7 finds their sweet spot in a song like Boom X3. An old school hip hop vibe with an addictive beat and colorful synth washes, this track has everything that a great track needs. There is a great balance between the rapping and vocals; the vocalist were even able to show a more stylistic singing style. Boom X3 is a fun track that shows the group’s charms.
Track 4 – Prove It
Taking a moment to unwind from the previous party tracks, Prove It is a smooth R&B number. The rapping and singing are both in a softer style that allows for more emotion to come through. Although this is a slower tempo R&B track, there are still many hip hop stylings to nod along to.
Track 5 – 노잼 (No Jam)
No Jam is a bright and playful track. With a party-like anthem, it has hints of reggae to keep it light. No Jam talks about only having fun when your special someone is near. The vocals are great in the song and it has a good vibe, but it doesn’t stand out like other tracks on Flight Log: Turbulence.
Track 6 – Hey
Hey is a snappy upbeat tune. Relying on drums and guitar, the groups’ vocals are also shining. Hey has a feel good vibe but the lyrical content is actually serious in nature. They are singing about a boyfriend needing to treat their girlfriend better as the boys proclaim, “Hey! Be a man.”
Track 7 – Mayday
Bringing the overall plane references back, Mayday is here to take the listeners on a journey as the boys are on a quest for help. As this song starts out slow and emotionally laced, there is an unexpected turn when it becomes an upbeat song in the bridge, and then reaches a new height in the chorus. The chorus is unique because it features both singing and rapping. Due to its dub step nature, Mayday also has many breaks in the music for a dance break if the group were to ever perform this live.
Track 8 – My Home
My Home has a slow, tropical feel. This is a trendy hip hop track with a catchy chorus and memorable rapping. The laid back vibe blended with the upbeat stylings in the bridge are pleasant to hear.
Track 9 – Who’s That
Who’s That is an attention grabber from the first sound effect. This is a fun, yet soft track that keeps elements of an island feel. Who’s That allows GOT7 to talk about their jealousy in a somewhat playful way. This is a simple track, but I think it is one of the more unique tracks on Flight Log: Turbulence.
Track 10 – 만약에 (If)
If is an emotional ballad-like R&B song that has a nice melody and beat. If also showcases GOT7’s vocalists well, but it’s your typical Kpop group ballad song. This is one track on the album that I would more than likely skip each time.
Track 11 – 아파 (Sick)
Sick is a sentimental R&B track. GOT7’s vocals are extremely solid in this heartfelt track about a past love. The chorus is easy to sing along to which adds more to the song’s overall likability. This is one of the group’s best vocal performances.
Track 12 – 니꿈꿔 (Dreamin’)
Kicking the flavor back up, Dreamin’ is next. With addictive drum slams, this is a hip hop song with tastes of synthpop and bits from the 80s retro music scene. Dreamin’ is a sweet, fun, and catchy song that is easy to get lost in.
Track 13 – Let Me
Flight Log: Turbulence is closed with a dreamy, sweet feeling in Let Me. This is an R&B track that allows the boys to spill their hearts out. With an addictive beat and modern sound effects, GOT7 is able to showcase their talents in singing and rapping.
