JB, Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, Bam Bam, and Yugyeom end their year long Flight Log trilogy with Flight Log: Arrival. GOT7 prove that they have matured musically as they took part in the lyric creation and production of this mini-album. This group continues to test their boundaries as they try a wide range of genres with their undoubtedly improved vocals.
Track 1 – Never Ever
Setting the tone for the mini-album is the title track, Never Ever. This track is an upbeat, futuristic song with a catchy rhythm. GOT7’s vocal line really shines in Never Ever as they showcase their full range and killer ad libs. Although the backtrack is intense, this is actually a nice love song.
Track 2 – Shopping Mall
JB, Jackson, Bam Bam, and Mark all wrote lyrics for this fun, high-sounding track. Shopping Mall is an electro hip hop track with a danceable groove. The witty lyrics of comparing a girl to being in a mall is executed over distinctive rapping and A+ vocals. The high pitched synthesizer mixed with other unique embellishments makes for an entertaining and memorable track.
Track 3 – Paradise
GOT7’s Jinyoung graces listeners with a beautiful love story over a tropical beat in Paradise. This is the first time GOT7 has tackled such a heavy dancehall song, and it works for them! Listeners can clearly distinguish each individual member, particularly in the chorus when each vocalist puts their own flavor on singing ‘paradise.’ Paradise has many characteristics that should have put it in the running for title track. There is never a dull moment between the great vocals, chic raps, and powerful booming instrumental.
Track 4 – Sign
Taking a turn in style, GOT7 tackles a side we don’t hear from them very often. Sign is a trendy, minimalistic R&B tune with subtle, yet full sounding synths. Although there’s a sensual vibe and sound, the lyrics are actually fairly sad as they sing about longing for a girl to return. This chilled out style is something that suits these boys very well as they’re able to really showcase their powerful vocals and rapping.
Track 5 – Go Higher
The mini album kicks up the energy with a trap meets electronic track with Go Higher. The consistent bass thumping and auto-tuned sounds make for an exciting song. The rappers stand out most in this, particularly Bam Bam during his rap at the halfway point. Go Higher definitely makes for a great concert song, but it gets lost being amongst other tracks that show the crew’s musicality a little better.
Track 6 – Q
Q is a surprise as it’s a lighthearted and sweet R&B song, unlike any of the other tracks. Leader JB wrote this sweet and witty track about wanting a ‘cue’ from a girl on her true feelings. Upon first listen, I didn’t care for Q as it doesn’t match the vibe of the overall album, but it’s charming and allows for the group to showcase how versatile they are as artists.
Track 7 – 양심없이 Don’t Care
Don’t Care is an R&B track with trap beats, and it’s the standout track of Flight Log: Arrival. It was written by the youngest member, Yugyeom, and each member shows off their vocal abilities. This is a suave track full of synths and snaps that flaunt the harmonization of the vocals. The simple yet captivating instrumental allows the vocals to resonate over it in a smooth manner.
Track 8 – Out
GOT7 ends Flight Log: Arrival with a party track in Out. This closer has a similar vibe to Go Higher as it’s another trap-based hip hop song. However, even though Out has a little more musical substance, it falls flat in the chorus with the repetitive “I’m Out”. Despite that, the vocals from Jinyoung and Youngjae are really beautiful in the breakdown of the track.
