Girls’ Generation TTS – ‘Dear Santa’ Album Review

One year and three months after their last mini-album Holler, the sparkling girls of Girls’ Generation’s TTS subunit returns with a brand new winter holiday themed album, Dear Santa. TTS, also known as TaeTiSeo, is formed with the lead singers of Girls’ Generation — Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun. TTS is known for their sweet yet powerful vocals and their signature R&B soul with a pop twist music style. Released just in time to warm your hearts this winter, Dear Santa keeps up the TTS tradition. May you have a merry Christmas and happy 2016 with the cheerful and festive sounds of Dear Santa.

Track 1 – Dear Santa

Title track Dear Santa begins with soft piano riffs and light jingles accompany the TTS’s winding R&B ad libs to create a wistful mood. But it unexpectedly transitions to an upbeat, swingy, and jazzy tune half way through filled with Christmas jolly and a bit of gospel vibe. The girls’ playful vocals and the bouncy piano chords instantly brighten the mood and make you happily rock along.

Track 2 – I Like The Way

Drums, bass instruments, and electric guitar join hands to give this uptempo pop number a cheery atmosphere and rhythmic groove. Though the girls showcase their amazing ad libbing skills throughout the track, the melody and composition of I Like The Way is not quite as memorable.

Track 3 – 겨울을 닮은 너 (Winter Story)

Winter Story exudes a smitten and heartwarming vibe thanks to TTS’s sweet voices and the velvety acoustic guitar riffs in the background. This simple ballad uses nothing but finger snaps and percussive guitar techniques to keep the tempo as it expresses the wholesome feelings of meeting a lover after a tiring day, amidst a beautiful snow shower.

Track 4 –  Merry Christmas

Whimsical and heartfelt best describe Merry Christmas — a rich holiday flavored song with a unique R&B twist to it. It feels both festive and modern at the same time with a dreamy and bluesy melody. The girls use their emotion-filled voices to wish everyone a happy holiday.

Track 5 – 첫눈처럼 (First Snow)

First Snow is another upbeat pop song with syncopated rhythms and many instrumental elements like organ, brass, and synthesizer sounds. While the excitement and overwhelming emotions as the year comes to an end can be fully felt throughout the song, the melody is just a bit tame for my taste.
