The six member rookie girl group, GFriend, released their second mini-album, Flower Bud, in the summer of 2015. This mini-album is full of upbeat and medium tempo dance tunes that brighten your mood with youthful energy. Though not an album worth falling head over heels for, Flower Bud signifies future growth for GFriend with promising vocals displayed through its cheerful songs.
Track 1 – Intro (Flower Bud)
Creating the atmosphere for the songs to follow, Intro (Flower Bud) is an angelic, sugary, and extremely feminine song. It sounds very similar to early 2000s American and British girl groups. The opening track also samples the title track Me Gustas Tu to hint at what’s about to come.
Track 2 – 오늘부터 우리는 (Me Gustas Tu)
Me Gustas Tu, is about a girl shyly confessing her true feelings to an equally shy boy. This is an exciting and playful track, driven by jolly keyboard strokes, hints of synth hits, and peppy electric guitar. Me Gustas Tu is definitely a standout number with catchy melody that is perfect for a title track.
Track 3 – 하늘 아래서 (Under The Sky)
Under The Sky is a cutesy, upbeat dance song. There is a fun and memorable electric guitar solo that I particularly enjoy. The vocals are very solid, but it lacks originality and sounds like a track that I’ve heard from another girl group before.
Track 4 – One
One is a fresher, more unique tune compared to the previous track. This song has sweet vocals that ride smoothly over the background music. It’s also got a charming, repeated chorus that’s easy to pick up. In short, One is comforting and upbeat at the same time, and definitely easy on the ears.
Track 5 – 기억해 (My Buddy)
My Buddy continues with the lighthearted and upbeat vibe. This track is full of solid harmonies partnered with powerful strings to bring out a sweet melody. The tone of the song leaves one feeling inspired, although the lyrics are too redundant for my liking.
