Heads up, there’s a new boy band in town — Day6. Following the success of their senior group artists 2PM and GOT7, Day6 is now rocking the Korean music world with their self-composed songs from their debut album The Day, which topped the iTunes music chart soon after its release. Day6 puts an interesting spin on pop rock music in The Day, which includes cool synths, modern beats, and even emotional raps that are rare among rock bands. As expected of a JYP group, the boys of Day6 didn’t fail to impress the world.
Track 1 – Free 하게 (Freely)
Freely is a fun EDM infused pop rock song and a perfect start to the album. This song is a super high-energy party tune and will surely make you get off your seat and jump to the beat. I was feeling a bit sleepy before I listened to it but after I did, I suddenly felt energized with a bright mood.
Track 2 – 이상하게 계속 이래 (Out of my Mind)
Out of My Mind is a mid tempo pop rock number about a man going crazy over a girl even if she is pushing him away. When I first listened to it, I wasn’t immediately hooked because it sounds like a typical song you’d hear from a rock band. Although the melody didn’t grab my attention, I really liked the contemporary, groovy electric guitar intro and the rap section half way through, which are different from other bands.
Track 3 – Congratulations
The Day’s title track, Congratulations swept me off of my feet. At first, I thought that this is just another one of those girl-leaves-boy-so-boy-is-so-sad-and-can’t-move-on songs. But when I researched the lyrics, I was pleasantly surprised because it’s actually a song that conveys the feelings of “she left me but I’m much happier”. It stands out among other alternative rock songs because it’s a very creative song lyrics-wise. What I like most about it is the change of tempo during the second verse after the rap part.
Track 4 – 버릇이 됐어 (Habits)
Here we have an electro-rock song that incorporates a solid beat and cool synth sounds. Habits is the kind of song to listen to if you just want to feel good and forget about the stress around you. However, it’s actually my least favorite song on the album because it sounds similar to Beast‘s Gotta Go To Work and lacks a bit of originality.
Track 5 – 태양처럼 (Like That Sun)
This song exudes full-on happiness and makes me feel like I’m really driving off to the sun. The lighthearted and bouncy electronic beats have a charming Latin vibe to it and make Like That Sun feel like the perfect summer vacation with the sun shining brightly down on me.
Track 6 – Colors
Colors is a song that starts with a slow, dramatic beat and then turns into an all-out power rock ballad track. At first, I thought it’s a breakup song common among rock bands. But it’s actually a much deeper song about the internal struggles of a young one who tries to figure out the purpose of his life . The relaxing vocal on each verse that becomes increasingly powerful when it reached the chorus is what I liked most about the song.
