Our newly crowned pop rock royalties are back again to dazzle us with their amazing music and talents. Rookie group Day6 has been through a tough time in the last few months when the group lost one of its members so soon after debut, but they demonstrate their mental strength and determination with a valiant comeback album, Daydream. Daydream is a pop rock hybrid album that showcases Day6’s expertise and unique interpretation of rock music through mixing other popular modern genres like hip hop, swing, and electronics.
Track 1 – First Time
First Time is a fresh soft rock track for me because it adds a modern twist to the good old doo-wops from the 50’s-60’s era. The amazing guitar in the bridge saved it from being too boring. At first, First Time‘s positive aura makes it feel like a song shouting about youthfulness and freedom. But as expected from Day6, they don’t usually go with the norm. First Time is actually about someone saying goodbye and letting go of a person dearest to him.
Track 2 – Blood
The next track of Daydream, Blood, sounds like a song from the band, Imagine Dragons, because of the quick strokes of low-pitched guitar rhythms. Blood is a bass and guitar led upbeat number infused with electronic rock elements and doo-wops that sound like synths to enhance the song. It turns to a party tune when the chorus comes around, ideal for a summer night.
Track 3 – 놓아 놓아 놓아 (Letting Go)
The song that left the hearts of all the fangirls crying is the title track of Daydream, Letting Go. It’s a slower rock ballad that starts off with what seemed like voices of angels singing in an a cappella style, with perfect synchronization and harmony. Day6’s signature rap section accompanied by sweet piano is present as well. Although this song has a strong beat, I really felt the sadness that the song was trying to impart onto the listeners. To some, Letting Go may be a typical ballad, but for me, the emotions that Day6 is trying to show really won my heart.
Track 4 – Sing Me
Sing Me, mixing EDM with pop rock, is the type of high energy song you’d jump along to at a concert. The pounding beat, rhythmic synths, and funky guitar riffs easily get you to perk up your ears. Sing Me slows down the pace during the bridge to allow the boys’ echoing vocal harmonies to be the focal point. It’s a fun and upbeat tune that shakes off the lingering sadness the from previous track Letting Go.
Track 5 – 바래 (Wish)
Wish is chosen as the song with the most relatable lyrics by the fans. It’s got a lighter start then goes all out grungy hard rock during the chorus. What I love most about this song is the astounding and impressive guitar solo during the bridge. Though I really enjoyed the bridge, Wish is the type of song I usually hear from other international rock bands and not hugely memorable.
Track 6 – Hunt
Another nostalgic track in this album, Hunt reminds me of an 80’s swing song with its electric guitars accompanied by horns and flirty finger snap rhythms. Aside from the retro feel, the high notes, incredible guitar work, groovy beat, and the “ooh-aah” in the chorus all add spice to the overall composition of the song. I really think Hunt is a great way to end the album, straightforward yet extremely addicting.
