After promoting in Japan with their album Ying Yang and focusing on their individual projects, Cross Gene is back in the Kpop music scene with an all-new mini-album titled Mirror. Mirror shows off a darker and louder concept that had potential, but the execution just wasn’t quite there, where constant booming beats led to more headaches than hipness.
Track 1 – 검은색 또는 흰색 (Black or White)
Black or White is a powerful song that features a strong beat and strings orchestra at first and is later on joined by guitar riffs which then turns into a hip hop jam thanks to the synths during the pre-chorus. There are a lot of things happening all at the same time, but somehow harmonious together. When you listen to it again, you’ll develop a liking to the track despite it’s variety in tempo and beat.
Track 2 – 검은 마음 (Black Mind)
The next track confused me a bit as it contained the same melody and beat used in the verse of the title track Black or White. It has so much similarity that I had to re-check if I was listening to the right track. The only thing that changed was the chorus as it had a slower tempo but it didn’t really help make the song better overall.
Track 3 – 하얀 마음 (White Mind)
Sounding a bit different from the first two tracks, White Mind has a lighter feel to it because of the groovy Western styled synths that the beat plays along to, but you can still feel and hear that it share the same roots as Black Mind.
Track 4 – 연애지침서 (Love Guide)
Horns kicks off Love Guide, which is refreshing to hear at this point as the other tracks all sounded too similar. The chorus would be the highlight of the track with its carnival-like sounds and fun beat. However, its still just a safe tune that’s not particularly memorable by any means.
