Crayon Pop’s latest album after more than a year of hiatus, Evolution Pop Vol. 1 continues with their tradition of catchy, memorable songs. Evolution Pop Vol. 1 is an album that is intrepid and brave, and this often ends up with good results in their songs. This album is the perfect album to dance to all night long.
Track 1 – 부릉부릉 (Vroom Vroom)
The retro disco riff at the start of this song will definitely catch your attention. Also, this ditty’s beat, reminiscent of the 70s-80s, will definitely get you dancing as though you were at the disco with your date. Vroom Vroom is a youthful, infectious song that’s definitely the perfect beginning to this album.
Track 2 – Too Much
The combination of tinkles and synths in the intro is a great precedent for the quirkiness that will come later in the song. Too Much is a fun joyride that will take you on an emotional roller coaster on which you cannot tell which direction it will head in.
Track 3 – 두둠칫 (Doo Doom Chit)
This title track follows in the footsteps of previous title tracks (such as Bar Bar Bar), a statement-making, edgy earworm that will stick in your mind for months (or even possibly years). The girls’ bubbly vocals, together with the eccentric assortment of sounds in the backtrack (especially the sax), are integral in making this song a great success.
Track 4 – 부기우기 (Boogie Woogie)
Boogie Woogie is not as revolutionary as the previous songs, as it also has similar disco vibes. The girls do use peculiar variations in their voices though, effectively adding to the song’s happy-go-lucky mood. Also, the guitar plucks pair up with the synthesizer to make for a song that will certainly make you do the boogie woogie.
Track 5 – Tonight
Tonight, unfortunately, also gives off disco vibes, which is getting increasingly repetitive. If you’re listening to the whole album from the start, you might also feel bored by listening to the same genre again. Also, Tonight is not memorable because the previous songs already used the same elements that are displayed here — for example, the similarly-paced tempo and the girls’ vocal delivery style.
Track 6 – 다가와 (Get It Here)
While Tonight is boring, Get It Here is abrasive as it’s a little too loud to the ears. Also, Crayon Pop’s singing can get a little bit annoying here, with some of their vocal variations sung at inappropriate times. Like Tonight, Get It Here is a song you might want to skip if you don’t want to be listening to the disco genre again and again.
Track 7 – 스케치북 (Sketch Book)
This song changes gears from the cheerfulness of the previous songs, having a wistful tone. The familiarity of the piano and the repeated clapping are the perfect companions to Crayon Pop’s emotional and yearning vocals.
Track 8 – Love Couple
Like Sketch Book, Love Couple places the limelight on the sentimentality of Crayon Pop’s vocals. Their voices, along with the dreamy beat, provide a sense of warmth and comfort for the listener. The Zoo’s rapping parts are not rough either, rather his voice fits into the sentimental vibes of this song very well. Overall, Love Couple is the lovely ribbon added on top of this amazing gift of an album.
