The boys of BtoB are back to serenade you with their latest album, Remember That. BtoB found their calling when they picked ballad songs as their title tracks, starting with their first-ever R&B ballad song It’s Okay, that topped online charts only hours after its release. The boys carried on with another ballad song Way Back Home that gave them their first music show trophy. Now it’s time to explore more of BtoB’s charm with Remember That as they mix strong rap sections with sweet vocals.
Track 1 – Killing Me
Killing Me is a dreamy R&B ballad track with a slow beat aided by acoustic and electric guitar, light keyboard strokes, and a bit of chimes. Usually with ballad songs, the rap section is slowed down, but what surprised me was the fast rap part that complements the song as a whole. I think that the cool rap worked well with the song and sets it apart from other ballad songs.
Track 2 – 그려본다 (내가 그린 그림)(Color Your Days)
Next track Color Your Days is a pure ballad with a rhythmic beat. What I heard most aside from the amazing vocals and falsetto is the impressionable beat that is lightened up with drums to synchronize with the strong rap. Though it’s a good song to accompany you when the weather is cold, Color Your Days didn’t particularly stand out for me.
Track 3 – 봄날의 기억 (Remember That)
The title track of the album, Remember That, is a slow tempo, folk ballad song with a modern twist to it. I really think that this song has a refreshing and cozy feel. The verse after the first chorus is what I like most as the voice is low but magnetic. The cover of the album paints the perfect picture for Remember That as the melody and the smooth vocals remind me of cherry blossoms falling from the trees — sad but also beautiful.
Track 4 – Anymore
The first upbeat song in this album, Anymore, is a bass-infused funky song that reminds me of Maroon 5‘s song, This love. This energetic, hip hop inspired, pop crossover number with a bit of synths is my favorite track of the album as it wakes me up from the previous ballad tunes that lured me to slumber.
Track 5 – So Pretty
So Pretty resembles a western R&B flavored song, one that could be sung by Neyo thanks to its groovy melody and rhythmic beats. So Pretty is a sultry number that differentiates itself from other songs on the album. It’s not super catchy but I still like it because of the addictive beat and a bit of chimes.
Track 6 – 너 같아서 (Just Like You)
With what I deem as BtoB’s signature, Peniel’s voice opens the ballad. The beat feels like a slower version of So Pretty. BtoB shows off their powerful vocals as you get deeper into the song. The strong melody softens halfway through giving way to finger snaps. While the vocals of the boys really caught my attention at points, Just Like You doesn’t feel that new for me as I’ve heard similar ballad songs from other groups.
Track 7 – 자리비움(Empty Space)
Empty Space is a great way to end the album because of its fun beat that injects a dose of energy and wakes me up from all the mellow ballad songs thus far in the album. It’s a mid-tempo track with finger snaps and playful beats that hide the true meaning of the lyrics. I got hooked to this song because the lyrical content is a bit bitter.
