Brave Girls are renowned among underground Kpop listeners as a group with powerful and empowering anthems. Rollin’, their latest comeback, continues with such releases. However, apart from the memorable title track, the rest of the album has either mediocre instrumentals or does not fit with their vocals.
Track 1 – 롤린 (Rollin’)
Rollin’ is a surreal and ethereal house track that feels like being transported to a whole new world. The emotional highs in the chorus can be felt deeply, and the whole song is just “wow!”-worthy. Brave Brothers, their management and producer, has definitely chosen the best song for the title track, as it’s just so unique and statement-making.
Track 2 – 옛생각 (Memory)
Memory is a confusing and jarring number that might be a shock to the ears after the euphony of Rollin’. The largely discordant beat seems to be competing with Brave Girls’ vocals for attention. What adds fuel to the flame is that it’s placed right next to the memorable Rollin’, further underlining Memory’s inferiority.
Track 3 – 서두르지 마 (No Rush)
While the problem with Memory is that the melody was incompatible with their vocals, for No Rush, it’s the reverse. The rhythm for No Rush is actually posh and calming, but the strong nature of Brave Girls’ singing just doesn’t match, striking as dissonant. Essentially, No Rush is an appealing and flamboyant R&B ditty that just isn’t up Brave Girls’ alley.
Track 4 – 하이힐 (High Heels) (Remix)
This remix version of High Heels is unexpectedly lounge-like, with just enough of their signature hip hop sound to spice things up. If you’re not a fan of the full out, energetic original, this might be more to your taste.
Track 5 – Outro (Rollin’)
This short last track turns out to be rather forgettable. It’s basically the instrumental version of Rollin’, adding in some other sounds which don’t have much purpose or effect. The album should have just ended with the remix version of High Heels.
