If you’re like me, you didn’t know about the amazing girl group that is Brave Girls until their mini album High Heels hit the charts last month. I immediately fell in love with the energetic sound and feel of their musical style after listening to all of their songs from 2011 to date. Following their lineup change and three year hiatus, the group is back as seven members with more than enough swag and eccentricity. Although some of the tracks were not as impressive as expected, the Brave Girls did a great job with this total girl power mini album.
Track 1 – 하이힐 (High Heels)
The perfect opening to this album and the title track, High Heels is a fun pop tune with funk feels about being sexy in high heels for a lover. This track is fast paced, with powerful vocals laid over great instrumentals (I especially love the bass line). Although this song is about pleasing a lover, it also has a girl power vibe to it, and the constant repetition of the title only serves to make it a more memorable tune.
Track 2 – Help Me
Help Me is another upbeat track that talks about being helpless in a one-sided love. Although this song is not as ear-wormy as the first track, it’s a nice song with relatable lyrics. But overall, I found it a little ordinary compared to all the other songs on this album.
Track 3 – Whatever
The third track is a hip hop song that talks about getting tired of a boring man; the girls sing that he is really “whatever” and not fun. My favorite thing about Whatever is how relatable and funny the lyrics are. I found myself laughing and nodding my head to the beat just a few seconds into the song.
Track 4 – 만나지 말걸 (Don’t Meet)
Don’t Meet is a mellow track in which the girls try to negotiate a breakup before things get worse. The one fault that I found is how bland it felt, as the song doesn’t make an impression until after a number of repeated listens.
Track 5 – 했어 (Deepened)
Deepened, already a popular Brave Girls single from earlier this year, is the perfect conclusion to this album. It’s a lovely mixture of R&B, pop, and hip hop. The song talks about how a lover has changed, and I especially enjoyed listening to the second verse. Everything from the vocals, the rap, lyrics, and general atmosphere of the song is aurally pleasing.
