After the huge success with their “school trilogy” series, Bangtan Boys quickly rose to fame and became synonymous with hallyu in 2015. If you’re a kpop fan, chances are you’ve heard of them. Now, the Bangtan Boys are back with a new series of mini-albums, The Most Beautiful Moment In Life. Part one of this poetically named album is released in spring and the second part will be coming in fall. Interestingly, besides the dreamy title, The Most Beautiful Moment In Life, Pt.1 is entirely something else. With a grungy and aggressive album, Bangtan Boys leaves a striking impression that can hardly be ignored.
Track 1 – Intro: 화양연화 (The Most Beautiful Moment In Life)
The intro track immediately sends a signal of strong personality and attitude found throughout The most Beautiful Moment In Life, Pt.1 album. Though the background music is slow and mellow with bouncing basketball like beats, the track exudes a sense of intense distress. The angst and breathlessness within the rap especially reminds me of the angry phase of Eminem. Though not a personal favorite, it’s quite an interesting choice for a first impression.
Track 2 – I Need U
Things quickly transition over to a more melodic and sentimental mood with I Need U. Even though you can still sense the frustration within the rapped verses, the feeling is toned down through the softer yet extremely catchy chorus. This urban styled electronica hip pop song instantly grabs my attention and has me singing along.
Track 3 – 잡아줘 (Hold Me Tight)
Beautiful acoustic piano riffs and light synths open Hold Me Tight, a mid-tempo contemporary R&B hip hop number that follows suit. The best part of the song is the rhythmic rap that breaks up the surprisingly plain and repetitive melody to give it a bit more life than it otherwise would have.
Track 4 – Skit: Expectation!
Not reviewed.
Track 5 – 쩔어 (Dope)
Dope brings the album back to the uptempo side with a whole lot of swagger and energy. This electronic hip hop danceable tune features super addictive string synths mixes and pounding beats that are imprinted into your mind at once. Dope is hands down my favorite song on The Most Beautiful Moment In Life, Pt.1.
Track 6 – 흥탄소년단 (Boyz with Fun)
Boyz with Fun kicks off with an unusual a cappella styled chant by the members and adds on bass instruments and rhythmic beats to give it a funky retro vibe. Like it suggestions, this entertaining number reminiscent of 80’s funk hip hop is full of humor and character.
Track 7 – Converse High
Funky guitar riffs, light bass line and percussion beats make Converse High a more cheery and romantic R&B hip hop track. Bangtan Boys show their softer side by pairing airy vocals to the groovy melody. Though Converse High can also come off as a tad repetitive, the charming mood it creates do make it easier on the ears.
Track 8 – 이사 (Move)
Here we have a hip hop number with a nostalgic 90’s flavor. Move has a mellow tune with light percussion beats and simple electronic guitar chords. The rap is perhaps the most laid-back on the album and the vocals are equally relaxing sounding. While comfortable, Move is unfortunately not a standout track and lacks a bit of oomph.
Track 9 – Outro: Love is Not Over
In contrast with the fierce album opener, The Most Beautiful Moment In Life, Pt.1 finishes off with an unexpectedly clean and calming ballad. Love is Not Over uses simple piano strings to accompany the boys’ wistful vocals and delivers an emotional temporary goodbye. See you in fall, Bangtan Boys!
