April – ‘Prelude’ Album Review

DSP media’s latest girl April releases yet another peppy and sweet album, Prelude, after a year since their last comeback. Despite being almost uniform to the rest of their discography, Prelude is an album that contains enough catchy and melodious tunes to keep you listening.

Track 1 – 봄의 나라 이야기 (April Story)

April Story is a mellow and sonorous ballad that has the impact a title track should have. It’s a song that offers a more mature and emotional take on pop music, showing how April has developed as a group since their debut in 2015. Though the energetic backbeat reminds me of GFriend, the tender vocals are nonetheless definitively April’s.

Track 2 – 지금 모습 이대로 (As It Is Now)

As It Is Now is a fast retro disco track with synth sounds to spice it up at just the right times. Despite being a melancholic number, it is surprisingly catchy and dance-inducing.

Track 3 – 시간아 멈춰라 (Stop Time)

Although Stop Time is a pleasant-sounding romantic pop ditty, it just blends into the rest of the album indistinctly. Besides, it lacks a catchy chorus and doesn’t do April’s vocal ability justice.

Track 4 – WOW

WOW is a fun and buoyant track that immediately lifts your mood up from the previous songs. I particularly like the transition between the acoustic-based verses and the busyness of the chorus.

Track 5 – Fine Thank You

Fine Thank You is a mite too dull, as there isn’t much happening in this emotional, quintessential ballad. Not only that, the girls’ voices felt slightly out of place with the calm beat.

Track 6 – 꿈사탕 (Dream Candy) (Special Ver.)

The special version of Dream Candy is an innocent and youthful pop ditty with the soothing effect of the piano and violin. What is not to like about the girls’ cheerful vocals and the harmonious beat?

Track 7 – Muah! (Special Ver.)

The special version of Muah! has the atmosphere of a fun and carefree night out with friends. This song infuses a dash of digital synth sounds to spice things up a little from their usually wholly cute image.

Track 8 – Snowman (Special Ver.)

April’s innocence and cheerfulness gets really repetitive with the special version of Snowman. The dreamy melody and the girls’ delicate vocals managed to save this song from a rather negative review.
