While there are many idol groups that put on a great performance, there are a few multi-talented individual idols that go beyond just being great performers. These standout idols indulge in the creation of the music they perform, from producing to composing to writing lyrics. Here are a few of these do-it-all idol talents, with brief overviews of their impressive contributions to Kpop.
G-Dragon
Let’s start off with one of the most well-known idol singer-songwriters and rappers, G-Dragon. G-Dragon has been involved with writing, composing, and producing for BIGBANG since their debut, as well as for other YG artists and his own solo endeavors. Some of the iconic BIGBANG tracks that he created include Lies, Last Farewell, and Haru Haru.
Yenny (Ha:tfelt)
Debuting in 2007 with the Wonder Girls, Yenny is a force to be reckoned with. Yenny, similar to G-Dragon, has been involved in the creation of a couple of tracks since her group debuted. However, some of them were never officially released like For Wonderful and Smile, which she also composed. Recently, Yenny composed and wrote lyrics for the Wonder Girls’ latest album, Reboot. Those tracks are Baby Don’t Play and One Black Night. Yenny, under her alias Ha:tfelt, also composed, wrote, and arranged all seven tracks on her solo debut album.
Woozi
Woozi is impressive because of his age, being only 18 when his group, Seventeen, debuted in 2015. He’s already accomplished a lot of milestones that many artists dream of; he writes, produces, and composes the majority of Seventeen’s tracks. This talented soul also comes from a classical music background which can be heard in many of Seventeen’s songs.
JB (Defsoul)
GOT7’s fearless leader has been cranking out some great tracks for the group. JB, under his alias Defsoul, was very involved in crafting the groups’ latest release, Flight Log: Departure. JB helped write and compose the tracks FISH, Something Good, and Home Run. He definitely has a bright future ahead.
Ravi
Ravi is known for a having a distinct, baritone voice as VIXX’s rapper. He recently released a mixtape where he produced, composed, and arranged every track except one. Ravi also helped his groupmate Leo create the tracks for their subunit album, Beautiful Liar. Ravi even assisted with the lyrics for VIXX’s recent hit, Chained Up.
IU
While IU isn’t in an idol group, she couldn’t be left off of this list. IU has an undeniably unique voice and awesome guitar playing skills. The fact that she writes and composes much of her own music only makes her an even more impressive artist. Some of her standout tracks include Peach, Abandoned, and Hold My Hand.
Jonghyun
SHINee’s very own Jonghyun is also a well-known singer-songwriter in the Kpop world. Jonghyun began as a songwriter with SHINee’s Juliette. He also wrote their recent single, View, and so many other hit songs in between. Jonghyun proved himself as a composer too, with both IU’s Gloomy Clock and EXO’s Playboy. Helping his groupmate Taemin with both of his solo albums, Jonghyun contributed to the production of the tracks Ace and Already. Jonghyun is even the mastermind behind Breathe from Lee Hi’s recent comeback.
There are so many other talented idols that are skilled in songwriting. Who are some of your favorites? Tell us in the comments below!
