Previously, we listed the transformations of popular boy groups from their debut music video to their latest music video. Now, it’s time to take a look at Kpop’s leading girl groups who debuted in 2010 or earlier. From cutesy colorful jeans to innocent white skirts, from sexy outfits to seductive gestures, these top girl groups show a variety of styles to make their fans happy. Let’s follow these seven girl groups’ development from their humble beginnings to their way to the top.
Wonder Girls
Debut Music Video: Irony (2007)
Back with the original members and before the world began dancing to their song Nobody, JYP Entertainment’s first ever girl group Wonder Girls set the dance floor on fire in their debut MV, Irony. The charming yet sly girls in their flirty school girl outfits team up against a guy who hurt one of the members. From using spy dog to voodoo dolls, Wonder Girls teach the guy a lesson to not mess with them. When I watched this MV, I instantly became impressed with Wonder Girl’s vocal and dancing talents. It’s only a matter of time that these girls will take the world by storm.
Recent Music Video: I Feel You (2015)
After a long three year hiatus and the departure of another set of members, Wonder Girls completely rebranded themselves as a glamorous and seductive four-member band sporting retro sexy concept in the comeback MV I Feel You. The MV shows each member playing a different instrument, equipped with neon lights and sleek color-block one piece swimsuits. Wonder Girls traded their schoolgirl charisma for sultry femininity. I Feel You‘s MV is a blast from the past using camera angles and melodies trends that were popular in the 80s.
Girls’ Generation
Debut Music Video: Into the New World (2007)
One of the biggest entertainment agencies in South Korea, SM Entertainment, introduced a group of nine fresh faced girls that we now know as Girls’ Generation through this teenage dream inspired MV Into the New World. Though still a bit blurry as HD was not yet known at that time, we can clearly see not only the beauty that these girls possess but also the talents each of them have. In particular, the group’s dance machine, Hyoyeon, is shown stretching on the stairs as she gets ready to bust out her smooth solo moves. The Into the New World MV presents the wholesomeness of the girls with light makeup and cutesy white skirts with matching white shoes, preparing to take the world by storm.
Recent Music Video: Lion Heart (2015)
Being one of the groups that sets the trend for an ideal girl group, Girls’ Generation(SNSD) never stop to change. From stylish colored skinny jeans in Gee, to playful cheerleader outfits in Oh, to vampy dark angels in Run Devil Run, they surely have gone through a lot of transformations. SNSD used their Lion Heart MV last year to demonstrate what it means to be a top notch girl group. Instead of being overly racy and exposing excessive skin, the girls were old-school Hollywood classy and seductive at the same time, flirting their way through swingy music in their glamorous flipper dresses.
4Minute
Debut Music Video: Hot Issue (2009)
4Minute’s debut music video, Hot Issue, is the very definition of neon bright. Unlike other groups, 4Minute didn’t go for the typical innocent route, but an over-the-top flashy look and a high-energy dance pop tune that suit the taste of the time. The bright color-block clothes, oversized sun glasses, and funky hairstyles were the very definition of Kpop during its early days of globalization. In the MV, Hyuna was often the center and had the most parts, earning the group’s unofficially name “the Hyuna group”. In Hot Issue, even without the flashing lights and booming horns, you can feel the sassy attitude and swagger these girls bring with them — something that became a 4Minute trademark over time.
Recent Music Video: Hate (2016)
Our playful and vivacious 4Minute turned into badass and seductive divas as the years went by. Few girl groups in the industry can top their swagger and toughness these days. In 4Minute’s latest music video, Hate, fans were in awe to see the girls juxtaposing ethereal goddess images right next to their usual bad girl concept. Contrary from what we saw in their debut music videos, Hate is much more monochromatic, using mostly a simple color combination of red and black. Their music has also turned from straightforward upbeat party tunes to a sophisticated blend of sentimental ballad with edgy hip hop beats, thereby conveying a much wider range of emotions and depth.
2NE1
Debut Music Video: Fire (2009)
In 2009, YG Entertainment formed a girl group with four members of different backgrounds and named them 2NE1. This rookie group immediately received positive feedback and numerous awards with their debut MV, Fire, thus rapidly racking up fans not only domestically but also in neighboring countries as well. 2NE1’s Lady Gaga inspired style set the trend for outlandish outfits, ridiculous hairstyles, and flashy music video production for the Kpop industry. Though Fire has two versions, the Space version is the more popular one, emanating a futuristic and electronic feel thanks to the bright lights and forward fashion sense.
Recent Music Video: Gotta Be You (2014)
Fast forward five years later, the 2NE1 girls have gained even more confidence and swagger collectively, but also softened a bit with more feminine charm compared to their early rookie days. From pretty and delicate Sandara to barbie doll Park Bom, from badass CL to flirtatious Minzy, each member has also developed their own distinctive aura. Before the spark of the issue about Minzy’s departure, 2NE1’s latest music video Gotta Be You is a splash of neon colors as they go through a maze with different kinds of imagery and mood board. The delicious pastel color palate and unique funky outfits put me in a trance and kept me watching on.
f(x)
Debut Music Video: LA chA TA (2009)
Rookie day f(x) members were spunky, charming, with a hint of bohemian style. They carried a very different aura from the other girl groups that debuted in the same year and is entirely something of their own. Rather than overly commercially produced, f(x) felt more authentic and organic as a group. In LA chA TA, it seems that the girls foresaw the future as they walk on the red carpet into a theater ready to put on their own show. The show turned out to be an unique combination of urban hip hop and cutesy girly moves that defined f(x)’s debut image.
Recent Music Video: 4 Walls (2015)
f(x)’s latest song 4 Walls, has an Alice in Wonderland inspired fantasy concept. The girls successfully transformed from their early boho days to graceful fairies here. We see them waking up in a bedroom, pouring tea on a table and just let it flow to the floor. The scene then cuts to them aimlessly wandering around in a forest. Suddenly, time stops and we see them floating in water full of flowers. If the debut MV embodies Hollywood glamour, the latest music video certainly has a pensive dreamy vibe contrary to the Euro-pop beat of the song.
Miss A
Debut Music Video: Bad Girl Good Girl (2010)
Though shot in a school environment, Miss A are fierce ballerinas as they say how they can be a bad girl and a good girl through their choreography. The girls make a strong impression right off the bat with not only their diva confidence but also their well synchronized dance moves. Though the concept is sexy fierce and the girls wear tight fitting black dance practice outfits, their makeup is light aside from the winged cat eyes. Their hairstyles are fairly simple too, but none of these got in the way of Miss A to show off their sass and what they are capable of.
Recent Music Video: Only You(2015)
With a much more daring and colorful outfit than in their debut, Miss A are bolder than ever in their Only You MV. Shedding their fierce students dancing at school image, the girls get ready for a night-out while under the surveillance from a guy’s binoculars. Miss A has also turned much more glamorous in both their visual and style compared to their debut MV. What didn’t change is their sharp and coordinated dance moves, only with even more feminine charm. With over 50 million views on Youtube, needless to say how much charisma the girls have.
Sistar
Debut Music Video: Push Push (2010)
Unlike other girl groups, Sistar definitely wants to show the music world what they want to be known for in their debut MV — sexy divas all the way. Sistar are pros when it comes to mixing and matching sexiness with other adjectives. In the case of Push Push, they were sexy and playful as they lined up to pose for a mugshot, then began showing off their fit bodies while dancing to the party song. Aside from the uber short shorts and dance performance, auto tune is noticeable all throughout the song, which was common among other groups that debuted back then.
Recent Music Video: Shake It (2015)
Sistar are flirtatious and rebellious school girls in their latest music video, Shake It. Shot in a school campus, the girls are party-animals even in front of their teacher. The boys go crazy for them as they stretch for their P.E class. Though Sistar still has a sexy and fun concept like in their debut MV, it’s evident how much they’ve matured through their upgraded accessories, makeup, hairstyles, vocal performance, and dancing skills.
