Throughout the last decade, we’ve seen top Kpop boy groups that were lucky enough to remain intact gradually transform over time. But before our idols became legends and world superstars, they were once rookies with a nervous and trembling heart as they made their first appearances in the world. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite boy band who debuted in 2010 or before and see how it all started compared to where they are now, as seen through their music video.
Super Junior
Debut Music Video: Twins (Knock-Out) (2005)
Over 10 years ago, Super Junior made their debut with rock pop Twins (Knock-Out) and made Kpop history as one of the largest idol group to date with 13 members. Back when long and spiky hair for guys was the trend, Super Junior sported the look confidently in various shades. Their debut MV painted the boys as tough guys along with special effects of fire, which we thought was real cool back then. Although new to the industry in 2005, you can tell right away that they have the potential to be worldwide superstars thanks to their energetic choreography and vocals.
Recent Music Video: Magic (2015)
Lose the early 2000’s hair and replace the baggy jeans with sleek suit pants, today’s Super Junior exudes a sophisticated and gentlemanly aura. Magic‘s music video, not leaving out their perfectly synchronized choreography, has a much lighter mood than their debut MV. The boys have traded aggressive shouting and a strong beat for sexiness and suave. You can see their signature flirty playfulness in Magic as they tell the girl why they like her.
Big Bang
Debut Music Video: We Belong Together (2006)
Before Big Bang became an internationally popular group known for their quirky and original creativity, they also started with snapbacks, bling necklaces. bandanas, and baggy hip hop outfits of that era. Collaborating with their labelmate, Park Bom, We Belong Together is a classic hip hop R&B song that was quite on trendy during those days. There were no heavy makeups, no rainbow hairs, and oddly enough, nearly no traces of Seungri either in the music video. At the end of the MV, Big Bang transforms from swag hip hop boys to hardcore dance machines as they proudly pronounce — “Big Bang is V.I.P”.
Recent Music Video: Bae Bae (2015)
Big Bang’s evolution is perhaps one of the most distinctive and drastic in Kpop’s history. They’ve shed nearly all of their original hip hop roots and has turned into fashion-forward, bizarre yet addictive metrosexuals sporting mostly trap and R&B genres. Bae Bae uses whimsical and impactful colors to give off a dreamy Alice in Wanerland feel. The MV shows the boys surrounded by women and the entire video is rather seductive. A decade later, it’s hard to believe that the provocative and avant-garde Big Bang members were once upon a time innocent teenage boys trying to act cool.
SHINee
Debut Music Video: Replay (2008)
Here is a boy group that started off with a boy-next-door, clean and innocent type of image. In the Reply MV, SHINee come off as fresh-faced cute high school boys that have a crush on a girl at school. Taemin especially look like a little boy who hasn’t hit puberty yet. Their music was catchy but soft, aimed at melting the hearts of all the noona’s out there. Their dance and vocal performances are no joke considering they were rookies in this MV. It’s quite apparent that SHINee will soon be an uber successful group with their strong fundamentals.
Recent Music Video: Married to the Music (2015)
From adorable high school students, SHINee transformed into mature and manly guys with an eerie and exotic Euro-pop flair as they party it up in the music video of Married to the Music. This MV feels like a tribute to Michael Jackson and is equal part retro artistic and morbid, featuring the removal of member’s body parts at times. Over the years, SHINee has elevated their charms to the next level and drastically improved their already impressive talents. I still can see the amazing dance and vocal performance that I once saw in their debut music video, only even more refined, synchronized, and confident now.
2PM
Debut Music Video: 10 out of 10 (2008)
Back when 2PM was a seven member team with Jay Park, they debuted as one of the hottest guy groups in the industry. Unlike many other youthful and feminine looking boy idol groups, 2PM went for a strictly masculine and mature image right off the bat, earning them the “beastly idol” nickname. With bright yellow outfits and ribbed abs, 10 out of 10 shows 2PM going crazy over a girl who is their labelmate, G.Na. As they convey in the song their thoughts about the girl being a 10 out of 10, you can clearly see that 2PM will be hell of a hot hunk group.
Recent Music Video: My House (2015)
Ditching the yellow pants but still hot and manly, 2PM are elegant gentlemen with formal wear in their latest comeback. My House has a Cinderella like theme but with a modern twist. 2PM is again attracted to a girl and tries to seduce her, only this time, there’s less rawness and more subdued sexiness and rounded sophistication. Appealing to the ladies with some sexy hip thrusts and their inviting hands, who wouldn’t want to get to know the charming men of 2PM better?
Beast
Debut Music Video: Bad Girl (2009)
With trendy outfits, optimistic attitude, and a whole lot of auto-tune, Beast sang and danced their hearts out in their first ever music video. Bad Girl shows both the tough and cute side of Beast at the same time, which I think is what they’re best at. In this futuristic looking black and white themed MV, not only did I witness the boys’ amazing vocals, but also their powerful robotic dance moves in the bridge. It’s immediately evident that Beast will be a breath of fresh air with their electro pop sounds and a new force to be reckoned with.
Recent Music Video: YeY (2015)
The Beast boys became full grown men as they party their way through YeY. Overflowing with drinks and pretty women, Beast is surely having an awesome night as they party their sadness away. Six years later, their music is still full of high energy dance pop and EDM elements, their attitude still playful, only Beast has evolved to a new level of confidence and suaveness. Their once rigid, robotic dance routine has been replaced with more fluid and subtle body movements. From cute and charming boys in their debut MV to now dangerously alluring men, the upgraded Beast is irresistible.
Infinite
Debut Music Video: Come Back Again (2010)
Combining rock infused pop tune with dark clothes and heavy eyeliner in is what makes Infinite’s debut MV different from others. At the start, you can see the boys in their black and white suits, dancing smoothly and in perfect sync to a Michael Jackson inspired choreography. The MV also shows a contrasting colorful day look, but I think that the glossy suit look really fit with the heavy electric guitar and Infinite’s unique polished look. I don’t think it’s an overstatement that Infinite’s debut is one of the most sophisticated debuts at the time, especially when compared to the rugged hip hop looks that their seniors mentioned above sported.
Recent Music Video: Bad (2015)
Now, I think that Infinite has an even more clear vision of the style and message they want to portray in their music videos. The boys of Infinite have perfected what I call the “polished emo” look from head to toe — heavy liner, sad looks with a dark vibe, contrasted with ultra clean-cut hair and outfits. In Bad, Infinite shows how they’re torn because they can’t let go of a bad girl. The MV is full of drama as the boys sing in front of broken mirrors as if to give themselves a warning. Infinite has really improved not only their visuals, but also their vocal talents and emotional conviction.
Teen Top
Debut Music Video: Clap (2010)
The boys of TOP media founded by Shinhwa‘s Andy, Teen Top, shows their power and masculinity in the school inspired debut music video Clap. Although it was shot in a school environment, the vibe is far from youthful or cheerful, but rather, some what serious and theatrical as they sing about going crazy for the girl. Teen Top’s dance movements are so sharp, precise, and synchronized that they earned themselves the nickname, “knife choreography” upon their debut. Through Clap, Teen Top has successfully positioned themselves as leaders of a new generation of dance machine idols.
Recent Music Video: Warning Sign (2016)
One would say that the knife is as sharp as ever in their dark and glamorous MV, Warning Sign. The MV shows monochromatic colors primarily in black and white as the boys sing about all the warning signs in the relationship. Teen Top has successfully elevated themselves from simple, clean-cut boys, to graceful high-fashion models. The music video of Warning Sign is filled with flirtatious scenes, flashy circular formation dance moves, and a group of men overflown with confidence.
