We’ve seen plenty of talented Kpop group members start solo endeavors in 2016. In fact, two renowned girl group members, Seohyun of Girls’ Generation and Suzy of Miss A, have just recently made their solo debuts. Yet, there are still so many other capable idols who are deserving of solo debuts as well. From excellent vocalists to professional songwriters, here is a list of idols who will grab your attention even on their own.
Taeil (Block B)
Taeil is the main vocalist of Block B and the oldest member. He has a comforting and alluring voice, and his exceptional ability to move hearts is displayed during the chorus in Toy. What makes me even more impatient for his solo debut is that he’ll likely enlist in the military in the coming two years, so if he doesn’t make a solo debut soon, we’ll have to sadly wait for a long time.
Solji (EXID)
Recognized by the public as one of the best idol vocalists in Korea, Solji is one of those solo debuts that’s long overdue. Solji’s singing is so precious and touching that her voice feels fragile, like she would break into pieces at any moment. I’m sure that if she debuts as a solo artist, it would be very well received.
Woozi (Seventeen)
Woozi is the whole package; he produces and composes the majority of Seventeen’s songs. It would definitely be interesting if he shows his diverse tastes through his own music, without having to cater to the needs of other members. Not only that, he has a warm, fluffy and rather unique feel to his singing, so hearing him solo will be refreshing.
Sojung (Ladies’ Code)
When you listen to Ladies’ Code’s songs for the first time, you’ll probably realize that one husky, smoky, deep voice stands out from the others, and that voice is Sojung’s. Sojung has style, maturity, and sophistication in her singing, like a good bottle of aged wine. Her voice is practically made for R&B and soul tunes, where she can make any solo tracks worth savoring.
Chen (EXO)
Chen is often regarded as the best vocalist of EXO. He can hit low notes better than most of the idols in the industry, and his mellifluous voice will make all the ladies swoon. As an OST frequenter, his collaboration Punch, Everytime, did extremely well on Korean charts, and the funky debut album of his sub-unit, EXO-CBX, did not disappoint either. Who knows what kind of music Chen might bring us if he debuts solo?
Yuju (GFriend)
Like most of the female vocalists mentioned in this list, Yuju has mature and powerful vocals. Her voice can be recognized almost immediately within any GFriend song, indicating that she stands out over the rest of the group in terms of singing. Having a solo debut would allow us to see her full potential, since she doesn’t have to be restricted in the bubbly youthful songs GFriend typically produces.
Youngjae (GOT7)
Youngjae has a heavenly voice, one that will make you feel all tingly and happy inside. Unfortunately, his potential is not fully utilized as GOT7 is mainly a hip hop group. But perhaps if we’re ever lucky enough to hear an R&B track or two from Youngjae, it would help more people realize the angelic voice they’re missing out on.
Wendy (Red Velvet)
Wendy is arguably the best vocalist of Red Velvet, and one of the best in SM as a whole. Her pleasant, lulling vocal delivery is especially highlighted in Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and Spring Love. Judging from the two tracks mentioned before, Wendy will definitely be able to tackle lavish and soulful R&B tracks and entice an audience all on her own.
B.I (iKON)
B.I made a name for himself as a talented rapper via reality programs long before he officially debuted with iKON. Though he didn’t get as far in Show Me the Money as bandmate Bobby did, B.I’s talents are far more formidable in the song composition and production department. He’s the mastermind behind not only iKON’s hits, but also labelmate Epik High, Winner, and Black Pink’s. One thing for sure is that B.I’s solo album will be a feast filled with earworms.
Yubin (Wonder Girls)
Having nine years of experience under her belt and being a contestant on Unpretty Rapstar before, Yubin has the perfect combination of experience and charisma in her performance. Her rapping gives off nonchalant, yet effortless vibes, and she would be amazing in a laid-back hip hop track that allows her more room to experiment without her bandmates.
