There were many releases from boy groups and soloists in 2016, some better than others. This list is a collection of some of the best singles, and they come in a variety of genres too. From loud, tropical tracks to mellow, sentimental ballads, the men in Kpop really had a lot to offer last year. For the list of best singles by female artists, click here.
EXO – Lucky One
To start things off, Lucky One is a sultry dance number. With R&B-influenced embellishments and EXO’s steamy vocal delivery, what’s not to like about this flavorful track?
Jay Park & Ugly Duck – 우리가 빠지면 Party가 아니지 (Ain’t No Party Like An AOMG Party)
Next up is an edgy and memorable party track. The boys’ distinctive rapping, and the intense, compelling beat fuse faultlessly together to show that there truly isn’t a party like an AOMG party.
MOBB – 붐벼 (Full House)
Continuing with the passionate vibes of the previous song, Full House is a high-energy bop that will get you dancing to the very end. The riveting, hectic rhythm as well as Mino and Bobby’s confident, fervent rapping are what will guarantee you swaying your head.
Jonghyun – 좋아 (She Is)
This neo-soul track has style and sophistication, with a groovy melody and Jonghyun’s mellifluous yet unique vocals. She Is is almost dreamlike, since the sweet ornamentations peppered throughout all collide to form something that resembles a pleasant symphony.
Dean – Bonnie & Clyde
Dean is an up-and-coming solo artist who is experiencing a spike in popularity largely because of his unique style and producing talents. Bonnie & Clyde happens to be one of the many splendid songs he has released this year. His sensual vocal delivery and the dramatic beat will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end.
Sam Kim (feat. Crush) – No 눈치 (No Sense)
If immense, sultry songs aren’t your cup of tea, this will probably appeal to you more than the other tracks on this list. Be prepared to be serenaded with Sam Kim’s flirty, charming singing, and relax in the calming, laid-back backtrack, and the occasional growl.
Block B – Toy
The influence of American music in Toy is really obvious, with the use of pleasant-sounding synths throughout the song, and the the contrast in loudness between the verses and chorus. Toy is a track which shows the emotion Block B can have, but at the same time shows how mature they have become as artists.
NCT U – Without You
Rock music heavily affects Without You, with powerful and full guitar strums forming most of the song. What’s really surprising is that NCT, a rookie group, is handling this genre, one that is usually only taken on by Kpop groups after years of experience in the industry.
DAY6 – 놓아 놓아 놓아 (Letting Go)
After Junhyeok’s unfortunate departure from the group, DAY6 released Letting Go, a slow and melancholic rock song. Letting Go is unexpectedly benign and soothing; the soft piano chords and DAY6’s poignant voices largely contributing to this. This track will definitely hit the hearts of many.
Crush – 잊어버리지마 (Don’t Forget)
Ending our best singles list is a sweet yet tender ballad about a sense of longing for a long-lost lover. Let Crush’s angelic voice overwhelm you as the dynamic, peaceful melody drones on and on.
