8 of the Best Kdrama Couples of 2016

This year has been an amazing year for the Kdrama lovers. From laughable comedies to emotional melodramas, from thrilling actions to dark fantasies, the list of memorable shows goes on and on. But now that the year has come to an end, it’s time to count our blessings and list some of the most lovable couples from Korean dramas that finished airing in 2016.

Song Joong Ki & Song Hye Ko

Descendants of the Sun

This pair is undoubtedly the most talked about couple of 2016. These two portrayed excellently well just how powerful love can be when it is predestined. The strong push and pull chemistry throughout their relationship helped build romantic tension and left the audience wanting for more. With tender moments that elicited a wide range of emotions from anyone watching, there’s no doubt that this couple deserves a first mention on this list.

So Ji Sub & Shin Min Ah

Oh My Venus

This pairing is one of those unlikely mixtures that turned out just right. With Shin Min Ah’s boundless energy despite wearing a fat suit, and So Ji Sub’s masterful switch between seriousness and cuteness, the drama never had a dull moment. Although, they played characters with very different personalities, our leads created heart-melting chemistry, and made it easy for viewers to imagine them together as a couple.

Ryu Jun Yeol & Hwang Jung Eum

Lucky Romance

Anyone who has watched Lucky Romance will agree that opposite personalities have never mixed as well as in this drama, where superstitious meets analytical. Hwang Jung Eum, already proven to be a goddess of slapstick comedy, is paired with a newcomer Ryu Jun Yeol, who has shown that his reserved sense of humor is not any less entertaining. Every moment of their interaction on screen elicited pure laughter and joy, making the drama a fun experience thanks to the main couple.

Park Bo Gum & Kim Yoo Jung

Lovers in the Moonlight

The Bo Gum, Yoo Jung collaboration is unarguably the most riveting couple in the second half of the year. Everything from the drama’s premise, the skillful acting, to their romance, and angst-filled moments between the two made them one of my favorite Kdrama couples ever. They gave incredibly believable portrayal of their characters and their adorable love story, reminding us of how beautiful and innocent youth truly is.

Lee Seo Jin & Uee

Marriage Contract

Unlike most of the other happily-ever-after couples on this list, the love story between the main characters of this drama was built upon a sad start and an even more heartbreaking ending. However, perhaps because of that, the impressive emotional journey from watching their unconditional love for each other, despite their age gap, seemed particularly real and close to heart, as if they’re people that you know personally.

Jin Goo & Kim Ji Won

Descendants of the Sun

Although these two were not the lead couple of the drama, they made such a great pair that they might as well have been in any other drama. Their faithfulness and selflessness towards each other created such tension and anxiety that it practically made us want to physically push them together. Yet, when they finally did get together, their romantic and cute moments made all waiting worthwhile. These two certainly stole the hearts of the viewers almost as much as the main couple.

Lee Jong Suk & Han Hyo Joo

It’s common knowledge at this point that Lee Jong Suk is an ace at creating chemistry with just about any of his co-stars. It’s also common knowledge that Han Hyo Joo is an extremely talented actress. Hence, it’s inevitable that this real world meets fantasy couple made our list with their thrilling, rollercoaster romance. Viewers are drawn into the possibilities of the main couple despite their seemingly impossible barriers, and rooted for them to end up together all the way to the end.

Jung Il Woo & Park So Dam

Cinderella and the Four Knights

Most viewers would probably agree that this couple was seemed very unlikely at the beginning of the drama. But by the end, I only had eyes on the two of them as they fit so perfectly right together. While the drama was a worthwhile ride with all its maneuverings and love triangles, I particularly enjoyed watching the rocky relationship between sulky Jung Il Woo and his lively Cinderella blossom from initial disdain to true love.

Of course, there are still some deserving pairs who didn’t make the list, so do share your favorite couples of the year with us in the comment section below!
