The most wintery and magical of all holidays is right around the corner. It’s also the best time to cuddle up and binge on awesome Korean dramas with a cup of hot chocolate in your hands. Our list of winter themed Kdramas filmed in beautiful snowy weather will warm your hearts and get you into a Christmas kind of mood.
Winter Sonata (2002)
The most classic winter themed Kdramas has to be Winter Sonata. This beautifully shot drama contains so many iconic wintery scenes that many of its filming locations, including a ski resort, became popular tourist sites in Korea. It romanticized the pure and innocent winter love, and made us all fantasize about a snow prince in the shape and form of Bae Yong Joon. It’s also the first time that we actually wholeheartedly enjoyed the amnesia and destined love plot devices before they became overused and abused thereafter. In any case, it’s a must-watch for every true Korean drama fan.
Tree of Heaven (2006)
Tree of Heaven is one of the most visually stunning winter themed Kdramas, partly because it’s filmed in Japan. It’s a coming-of-age love story between two teens who became step siblings overnight. The cute and kind-hearted heroine played by Park Shin Hye slowly melts away the loneliness and iciness in her stepbrother’s heart as they fall in love. It’s a drama that’ll show you breathtaking views of a wintery Japanese small town with snow covered pine trees, complete with snowmen and snowballs.
The Snow Queen (2007)
If you’re looking for a solid melodrama with a bittersweet ending, this is it. Based off of the same name fairy tale, The Snow Queen is a story about the restorative power of love. Our main characters each have their own problems to deal with; the hero (Hyun Bin) lost his sense of self from regret and guilt, and the heroine (Sung Yu Ri) is icy cold from terminal illness. But when they meet, their love for each other healed all the pain. This drama gave us enough tears with its heart-wrenching story to melt all the whimsical snow it has captured on screen.
Will It Snow for Christmas (2010)
While Will It Snow for Christmas is filmed primarily in the winter times, this drama probably has the least emphasis and appearance of major snow scenes. The title is also somewhat misleading as it’s got nothing to do with Christmas, but more of a symbolic question of whether love with many obstacles will blossom in the end. Still, the melodrama drama has plenty to offer including great chemistry between lead actors Go Soo and Han Ye Seul, and younger versions of today’s megastars Kim Soo Hyun and Song Joong Ki all at once.
White Christmas (2011)
Unlike most other winter themed Kdramas on this list that usually depict great love stories, White Christmas takes a complete different direction into mystery, crime, and horror. It’s an intense and tightly-written drama about a group of students locked in at school during Christmas break and they have to solve the mysterious deaths happening under their nose to find the real culprit. If you’re weak hearted, I don’t recommend watching alone. But if you’re looking for some thrill, a great story, and all your favorite pretty boys (Kim Woo Bin, Sung Joon, Lee Soo Hyuk), you’ll find them all in White Christmas.
That Winter, The Wind Blows (2013)
If winter is in the title of the drama, you know it won’t be complete without some whimsical white snow scenes and magical chilliness in the air. The hero in That Winter, The Wind Blows is a swindler who pretends to be the long-lost brother of the blind and rich heroine in the hopes of repaying his debts with her fortune. But underneath her prickly remarks and cold attitude, he discovers her vulnerable and lonely sides that made him fall for her. If the stunning wintery atmosphere and dreamy cinematography don’t hook you, Jo In Sung and Song Hye Kyo’s nuanced acting and irresistible chemistry definitely will.
