Most Korean drama fans would agree that one of the best elements that make us perpetually interested in Kdrama as a whole is the love triangle. Though a frequently repeated plot device, the chemistry between characters and their love triangle dynamics make things fun and keep viewers interested to the end. Without further ado, here are some of our most memorable love triangles.
Gu Jun Pyo – Geum Jan Di – Yoon Ji Hoo
Boys Over Flowers (2009)
For many people including me, this drama was the inadvertent introduction into the amazing world of Korean drama and their penchant for melodramatic love. No one can truly forget the tense love triangle created by our leading cast. This was one of those cases where the viewers were sincerely and desperately torn between which man was the best choice for our heroine as both of them easily fit the bill. Till date, a journey down the Kdrama memory lane still leaves me wondering what could have happened if our heroine had ended up with the other guy.
Hwang Tae Kyung – Go Mi Nam – Kang Shin Woo – Jeremy
You are Beautiful (2009)
This particular drama deserves an honorable mention on this list even though it featured a love square in its case. This is one of the most memorable multiple love situations in a Kdrama for me because of how truly ridiculous the whole situation was. Everything from Jang Keun Suk’s elitist but protective attitude, to Jung Young Hwa’s serene smile and Lee Hong Ki’s over the top reactions made it easier to agree that anyone of them would be awesome as the heroine’s final partner choice.
Lee Gun – Kim Mi Young – Daniel
Fated to Love You (2014)
This particular triangle made this list for a lot of reasons, the foremost of which is that it’s a very unlikely situation in the first place. However, the writers of Fated to Love You did such a good job building up the love tension that even though the conclusion is literally written in the title, watching the drama invoked second lead syndrome. You find yourself hoping that the heroine ends up with the second lead.
Kang Tae Ha – Han Yeo Reum – Nam Ha Jin
This love triangle is particularly interesting because it pitches old love against new love, and compares the strength of the first love to an ongoing love. While the drama as a whole wasn’t very compelling, I enjoyed following it just because I wanted to see who Yeo Reum would end up with at the end of the drama.
Jang Hee Tae – Kim Il Ri – Kim Joon
Valid Love (2014)
The whole plot of Valid Love was centrally based on a love triangle which was extremely heart wrenching at the very least. Unlike most dramas where the love triangle is mostly a source of humor and a way to keep things interesting, this particular love triangle had me in a state of emotional torture as I could not decide, even till this day, my preferred choice for our heroine.
Cha Jung Woo – Na Ae Ra – Gook Seung Hyun
Cunning Single Lady (2014)
Revenge is best served by a second male lead who’s planning to steal your girl. This is what happens in this heartwarming rom-com when our hero decides to scorn our heroine in the silliest and most childish of ways. While viewers expected him to get the girl, it was still really entertaining to watch him compete with another man for her affection.
Gong Gi Tae – Joo Jang Mi – Han Yeo Reum
Marriage Not Dating (2014)
This triangle was the hardest for me to cope with as I was already battling a serious case of second lead syndrome. I feel like this was one of those cases where the second lead – Jeong Jin Woo – should have gotten the girl without a doubt. But it made for an interesting emotional ride to watch our heroine split hair with her feelings for the two males.
Jung Jae Min – Baek Ma Ri – Han Si Hoo
Like in Fated to Love You, most viewers already knew the ending of this drama from the start, as it was based on a well-known webtoon. However, this did not stop us from getting second lead syndrome after watching Si Hoo sacrifice himself and his love over and over again. Yeo Jin Goo, Seolhyun and Jung Hyun created such great chemistry on screen that it’s hard to choose which pair makes the best couple.
Ji Sung Joon – Kim Hye Jin – Shin Hyuk
This drama legit had about three love triangles with our leads navigating the throng of feels that were flying around in this amazing rom-com. Between these four people, we have enough love triangles to make a pyramid, which made it a fun ride up to the very end. Even though we suffered a huge wave of second lead syndrome here, it was extremely easy to agree with the heroine’s final choice.
Na Bong Sun – Kang Sun Woo – Shin Soon Ae
This is probably one of the most hilarious love triangles ever as it involved woman, man and ghost. The drama was so good at giving the ghost character that I actually started to root for her at some point, as if it’ll ever actually happen. While it was pretty easy to guess the end in terms of couple pairing, the drama is still a completely fun and riveting experience for the viewers from beginning to end.
