Following our first list of favorite Korean drama couples, we realized that there are many more beloved dramaverse duos than the ten covered in our original article. So, we made another list to highlight some more that we had a tough time leaving out last time. Here’s our second list of memorable Kdrama couples from the last six years. Enjoy!
Song Joong Ki & Song Hye Gyo
These two were undoubtably the center of attention in the first half of 2016. Sweeping through the hearts of many across countries and continents, the Song-Song couple paints the kind of destined love after numerous reencounters and countless life and death trials in Descendants of the Sun. Song Joong Ki, though younger than Song Hye Gyo by a few years, did a convincing job of portraying someone of equal age, intelligence, and maturity. While Song Hye Gyo’s masterful push and pull throughout their relationship helped build romantic tension and leaving the audience wanting for more — so much so that rumors of them dating in real life took off like wildfire.
Ji Chang Wook & Park Min Young
Park Min Young and Ji Chang Wook share an interesting love triangles with our hero’s hidden identity “Healer”, similar to the one between Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Superman. Our heroine idolizes Healer but doesn’t realize that the junior reporter hanging around her all day long is indeed Healer’s alternate identity. So, we reap the benefit of seeing our leads interact through two different relationships. Whether it be the cute bantering between them as senior and junior reporters, or the sweet yet restrained loving stares as protector and prey, Ji Chang Wook and Park Min Young gave us a convincing act of the ultimate blind love story in Healer.
Lee Jong Suk & Park Shin Hye
Nobody does bumbling angst as well as Park Shin Hye. It’s almost superhuman how many emotions she can display in one scene. And who better to compliment her than Lee Jong Suk, the expert portrayer of complex Kdrama lovelines, either with an older woman or an adopted sibling. Needless to say, these two also make such an amazing duo in Pinocchio. Whether through their sassy sibling rivalries or through their unconditional support for each other as a couple, you can feel their understanding and appreciation for each other in every moment of the drama.
Jo Jung Suk & Park Bo Young
Having never seen Park Bo Young in any drama prior to Oh My Ghost, I set out to watch and applaud Jo Jung Suk alone. But as soon as I got one taste of the exuberant cuteness these two made together, I fell in love with the idea of them as a real couple. They portrayed their romance in such believable ways that I started to feel like couples should be this fun in actual relationships. With her erratic zip from one personality to another, and his general puzzlement and indulgence with her constant changes, this couple is one of my favorite couples of 2015.
Jo In Sung & Gong Hyo Jin
Unlike most Korean dramas with largely exaggerated romantic relationships, Jo In Sung and Gong Hyo Jin gave us a super realistic and relatable view of what a true relationship is like in It’s Okay That’s Love. They have sweet and loving moments, but they also have quarrels and cold wars. They can be prickly and defiant to each other in one second and emotionally supportive in the next to conquer their respective mental issues. What I appreciate the most about this couple is that they don’t deal with dramatic incidents, secretive pasts, or silly love-triangles, just mundane everyday issues like “why are you moving out without consulting me?” that every real couple goes through.
Han Groo & Yeon Woo Jin
Marriage Not Dating (2014)
Pretending to be married to someone you know little about isn’t usually fun, not until it’s between these two, in which case I wish it would happen like this all the time. My favorite thing about this couple is how much silliness and fun they have together on screen . While they are both much less playful in reality, putting them together has created the comedic masterpiece that is Marriage Not Dating. There was no scene in which they were together that I didn’t have a good laugh, even when they were being serious. Han Groo and Yeo Woo Jin made the journey of a fake marriage a natural, believable, and hilarious one.
Lee Jin Wook & Jung Yu Mi
I Need Romance 2 (2012)
I Need Romance 2 is the ultimate drama for those into the long-term best friends turned into lovers storyline. Lee Jin Wook and Jung Yu Mi had so much chemistry and romantic tension during their love-hate, on-off relationship, that it’s hard for me to refrain from wanting to physically shove them together. Though they seem to squabble incessantly, It’s evident through our actors’ skilled acting that the couple not only have deep attractions toward each other, but also mutual consideration, understanding, and self-sacrifice. They are like siblings, friends, roommates, enemies, lovers and much more to each other; their lives simply revolve around each other.
Seo In Guk & Jung Eun Ji
Reply 1997 (2012)
There is no doubt that Seo In Guk is a great actor, and a lot of people would argue that Reply 1977 was his breakout role. In either case, a combination of him and Jung Eun Ji in this drama gave us a heartwarming view of teenage crushes, first loves, and youth in its entirety. They made such an adorable bickering couple that I was already praying they’d end up together before it was revealed in the drama. Our hero’s patience and silent support for the heroine is endearing and heart-melting, while Eun Ji’s audacious and clueless personality creates all the fun and drama in the story.
Lee Seung Gi & Shin Min Ah
My Girlfriend is a Nine Tailed Fox (2010)
This particular couple is one that I have watched over and over again in My Girlfriend is a Nine Tailed Fox. Every time I watch it, they make me laugh a little louder than the last time. Sometimes, fear begets love in a totally unexpected turn of events, and this couple portrays that process to near perfection. Shin Min Ah’s acting is always refreshing and her depiction of the innocent and straightforward fox turned human is extremely entertaining to watch. And Lee Seung Gi’s slightly cowardly but kindhearted persona is the most appropriate compliment for the strong personality she has in this drama.
Hyun Bin & Ha Ji Won
Secret Garden (2010)
If you’ve been a Korean drama fan for a while, chances are you’ve watched this drama and know of the awesome pairing that is Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won. It has always been a cliche for opposites to attract in dramas, but no one does wooing to an introverted yet mentally strong stuntwoman like Hyun Bin in Secret Garden. So many sweet scenes in the drama became synonymous with classic romantic moves that all girls dream of — wiping food off of her mouth and doing sit-ups together — just to name a few. This pairing is hands down one of the most famous couples in Kdrama land to date.
