One of the most crucial elements of Kdramas is easily the antagonist; the person who makes us pray for the hero and hope for a happy ending against all odds. While some villains are not so bad, and even relatable at times, some are just downright evil and hauntingly memorable. So without further ado and in no particular order, here are ten of the most villainous Kdrama villains.
Lee Jae Kyung (Shin Sung Rok)
My Love From the Star (2014)
No one can forget the disconcerting stare of the ring twirling Lee Jae Kyung in My Love From the Star. He was especially chilling as a villain because of how he asked after the health of a potential victim right before he struck. Armed with a sardonic smile and an oversize nail ring, this villain took care of his enemies with no hint of conscience.
Kwon Jae Hee (Namgoong Min)
The Girl Who Sees Smells (2015)
One of the scariest type of villains is the one you don’t suspect even while they are very close. And even when you suspect them, you have trouble getting proof or catching them in the act. Chef Kwon Jae Hee was one of such villains, smart, devious, and hides his intentions well. Even up until his eventual demise, his guileless smile was still unsettling at the least.
Min Joon Gook (Jung Woong In)
I Can Hear Your Voice (2013)
When your arch enemy knows your secret, it can’t be a good thing. This is the case in this drama with our villain who knows the secret weapon of the hero and uses it to his advantage for the most part. He is a particularly annoying villain because of the knowing smile he wears whenever he converses with the main characters.
Lee Joon Ho (Choi Won Young)
I Remember You (2015)
This villain was particularly troubling to watch because of his belief that he wasn’t doing the wrong thing. This self-justification coupled with the blank stare and soulless smile he always wore made him appear even more heartless as a villain. Choi Won Young successfully channeled one of the most chilling serial killers in the world of Kdrama. And it was particularly frustrating not knowing whether he’s going to be brought to justice for sure.
Kimura Shunji (Park Ki Woong)
Bridal Mask (2012)
Perhaps the most heart wrenching kind of villain is the good guy turned bad guy due to external influences or internal struggles. This is the case with Kimura Shunji in Bridal Mask. He was so focused on destroying his opponent – the hero – that his facial expression as well as his whole personality became fearfully twisted. The transformation in his character was equal parts entertaining, bewildering, and frightening.
Lee Jae Wook (Ji Jin Hee)
Blood (2015)
A two faced villain is a huge problem because you never know how or when they’ll strike. Lee Jae Wook mastered this skill in this drama to scary perfection as viewers started to ponder what his next form of attack would be at some points. Raising an army of evil vampires can’t be easy; unless you’re Dr. Lee Jae Wook, in which case it’s something you do with a smile.
Gi Chul (Yoo Oh Sung)
Faith (2012)
No villain inspires a confusing mix of anger, disdain, and fear quite as much as this particular villain. With a disturbing mix of arrogance, heartlessness, and apathy, this villain is both interesting and scary to watch as he controls the sequence of events around him with every black glossy strand of hair in place.
Lee Kang Joon (Jung Gyu Woon)
Birth of a Beauty (2014)
Every villain is driven by something, that is what makes them so bad and disdainful. This antagonist is as bad as it gets, unarguably blinded by his ambition. While he didn’t have a trademark creepy look or sinister smile like most villains do, he had an unsettling sneer. Even while his ambition was understandable, his actions and inconsideration for those around him made him one of the most hateful villains to me thus far.
Kang Hee Soo (Lee Hye Young)
Boys Over Flowers (2009)
This antagonist is the only female on this list. Any Korean drama fan will agree that this woman is one of the most detestable villains in the history of Kdramas. Lee Hye Young as Gu Jun Pyo’s mother wrecked so much havoc on the lives of other characters that it became hard not to hate her, even outside of the drama series.
Lee Jae Myung (Yoon Kyun Sang)
Pinnochio (2014)
This was one villain that was hard to hate and equally hard to love as well. His whole life was a series of perpetual unfortunate events and filled with nothing but revenge. At times, I didn’t know whether to feel sorry for him or to condemn him. It was especially heartbreaking to watch him because of how disturbed he was of his own actions; not that it stopped him in anyway.
Of course, these are just the villains from dramas I’ve watched. Do share with us your own top villains in the comment section.
